The President Speaks….

The Secretary’s Desk….

Another month, another meeting and another magazine.  I’m enjoying this job.  There is an ability to be creative and opportunities to communicate with other members that wouldn’t happen in other circumstances.

Unfortunately, one of the down sides is the lack of support from the members.  I am promised stories, tales and photos for inclusion and all too often they just don’t materialise.  Now it may not seem much to you the author, but there are members out there that don’t see us at meetings, they don’t see us on rides, they don’t see us on our social nights.  You might say that’s their problem and they should join in but it is easy to forget we have members strung out from the Sunshine Coast to Melbourne. Other members have jobs that prevent them from attending even when they live in Brisbane.

These members really look forward to reading what we have been up to; it is their only opportunity to participate in what we do.  In addition to this, it must be remembered that our Victorian Branch only commenced as a result of Goldwingers reading about what we do.

As Leyton Hewitt would say, “Come on” and get those articles in to entertain and encourage our “Brothers in ‘Wing riding”

Happy reading.

Bevan

Hi all,

The world is shrinking.  I’m sure you have heard this before, but today, with the internet we are fast approaching a global society.

At the forefront of this evolution is online personal trading, the most prevalent manifestation being Ebay.

All we have to do is log on and there at our fingertips is access to a world of products.  Of course the usual “caveat emptor” or “let the buyer beware” applies, even more so that at you local supplier.  Returning faulty goods is almost impossible with an Ebay auctioned item.

However, the savings can make up for the risks.

Example:  I recently have been lamenting the fact that several of the bulbs on my ring-of-fire have gone out.  Being sealed in plastic, they are not repairable.

Locally I could purchase a new set for around $200, but going to Ebay I managed to snag a set for US$66.56.  With postage costs and conversion, the total cost, delivered to my door in a week was $104.27.  Not a bad saving.

Just start up Ebay and put “Goldwing 1500” (or 1800) in the search field.

But we must be careful with our dealings.  Import duty will kill all your savings if you purchase too much stuff and there’s that non-existent return policy.

I guess it all depends on your preparedness to take risks.  Definitely the safest way is to go to your local supplier where you can get them same day and can return them if things don’t work.

But the thrill of the auction and getting your packages in the mail sure is fun.

Be careful out there

We have had a great month for rides and social evening.  Following strong recommendations from RustyandMaree that Mexican food is not necessarily hot, Thommo and I felt game enough to chance Montezumas!  Are we glad we did – it was great, the atmosphere, service and food were excellent.

As Bear reiterated at our meeting – we must do that again.  Also, Gecko and Kay’s scenic ride was brilliant – but we will not let our Victorian members know what wonderful weather we are enjoying at the moment!

Finalising the arrangements for our Christmas week-end, please contact me on 3366-7288 if you are joining us.  Full details are in the magazine, please confirm who you want to sleep with, and all suggestions and requests are very welcome.

Received an apology from the kids in Emerald (MikeandMarie) who will not be able to join us for the Christmas Week-end, hope we can catch-up with them in the New Year.

Meanwhile, Thommo and I will be busy this week-end getting our camper-trailer in good order for the week-end at Bikers Dream, also the bike will get some extra polish.

Ride safely everyone.

Followin’ the bike in front……..

And that’s just what it was for me, in fact, I was following a lot of bikes in front as I was riding tail for the day.  I know, I keep saying I won’t do that anymore but I actually enjoyed it; everyone in front must have been behaving.  This will be a strange ride report as I need something to fill some empty space in the magazine and for most of the ride, I didn’t have a clue where I was.  We assembled at the BP North and the photo below shows 10 wings lined up.  I know there was more on the ride than

that but if you’re bike isn’t in the picture, then you obviously parked in the wrong place.

With Gecko leading the way we headed up the highway looking for a likely road that would get us out of the traffic.  At least one false start and were off the highway and found ourselves on a road that went somewhere.  About here, I could add in a few words like, “after following this road for a while we turned off onto a road that went somewhere else”, but I won’t do that.  One thing I do clearly remember about the ride was that we crossed the Bruce Highway more times than I would have

thought possible, both under and over.  I think there was only one crossing we used more than once.  A look at the map shows a lot of small roads on the western side of the highway and I reckon Gecko knows all of them and there weren’t too many of them we didn’t travel over.  I guess

that knowledge is the benefit of Gecko’s probably misspent years in the area.

After touring around numerous roads and stopping at a down-hill T intersection with a road surface so slippery you could barely hold the bike stationery with your feet, we were treated to a wonderful

riding tour of the Botanical Gardens Car park.  I guess this was an attempt to qualify for a genuine AWRA about turn.

We then headed off to the Super Bee for smoko and honey tasting.  What great fun that was, haven’t been there for years. As you can see, Thommo won onto a bird.

You will also notice below that he was severely punished for his actions.  With all flavours of honey tasted, most settled down to a “snack” consisting of a waffles and cream and a coffee. After this there was a need for some exercise by wandering

through the grounds.  This result-ed in some excitement when Deb and Val decided to put their driving skills to the test using the hi-speed vehicles available for the purpose. No records were kept of the race results but the photos appear to speak for

themselves  By this time the weather had warmed up so it was off with the warm gear, back on the bikes and off again on more roads that led somewhere else.  Eventually, we came out on the Nambour Mapleton Road and I actually new where I was.

Down the mountain into Nambour then across to the Waterfront Hotel, Maroochydore for lunch.  Again, being true to ourselves, we immediately set about re-arranging the furniture into more suitable and socially convivial positions and enjoyed a great meal and good company.  It was great to see that we provide such great rides that Lindsay would fly back from overseas to participate and fly back the next day.

After lunch, we broke into two groups with some heading back

to Rusty and Maree’s for coffee while the rest headed back to Brisbane.

On the way home, Therese and I took the opportunity to catch up with Lionel and Mary.  (Just to tell them what a great ride they missed.)  The good news is that Lionel has been cleared and is driving again, so we can look forward to then being on our rides again.

Thanks Gecko, great ride even if I didn’t know where I was most of the time.                             Bevan

Victorian Dinner

Hello to all the members in QLD

Well as usual Melbourne turned out anther great night for our dinner pouring rain and cold however that did not dampen our sprits and every one turned up for the dinner at Sofia’s restaurant in Wheelers Hill. It also appeared that half of Melbourne was there as well as it was packed. The dinner again was a great success and as you can see from the pics Denny needed help to eat his ice cream

He is now not sure if the ice cream beats the custard tarts; I guess we will have to wait until the next ride.  Thanks to Doug and Preeta for travelling across the city on such a night, the Sunday was supposed to be a ride however the weather got the better of us and we postponed once again.

Thanks to John and Marg for selecting Sofia’s

Anyone for a swim?

An elderly man in Queensland had owned a large property for several years.  He had a dam in the next paddock, fixed up nice - picnic tables, horseshoe courts, and some mango and avocado trees.  The dam was properly shaped and fixed up for swimming when it was built.

One evening the old farmer decided to go down to the dam to look it over as he hadn't been there for a while. He grabbed a five gallon bucket to bring back some fruit.  As he neared the dam, he heard voices shouting and laughing with glee.  As he came closer he saw there was a bunch of young women skinny-dipping in his dam.  He made the women aware of his presence and they all went to the deep end. One of the women shouted to him, "We're not coming out until you leave!"

The old man frowned, "I didn't come down here to watch you ladies swim naked or make you get out of the dam naked." Holding the bucket up he said, "I'm here to feed the crocodile."

The moral of the story?: Old men might walk slowly but they can still think fast.

Honda Develops Motorcycle Airbag System

September 8, 2005 - Honda Motor Co., Ltd. today announced it has succeeded in developing the world’s first production motorcycle airbag system to be made available in 2006.

I’ve included a few pictures of significant changes to the bike including the air bag, integrated GPS, heater vents.  Apparently it will be available in differing models and will have goodies such as a heated seat. No change to engine, gearbox or frame.

The inclusion of an air bag has

created some chat on the forums.  For more information, here are a couple of sites:

Bear’s Necessities…..

Moose Hunting

Hi everyone!

Most of us (Wing Lovers) get to the stage in our life that the kids are grown up and it’s time for mum and dad to buy a Wing, take off for day trips or longer and just enjoy ourselves.  Most times  the Wings we  buy are second hand even if only slightly (reasonably low k’s) which brings me to one of our experiences with our Wing

As we had never ridden a Wing before we thought it was great (as you do), a smooth comfy ride and looking very cool of course - but still Hot! - anyway after several months of touring around it got to the stage that something was just not quite right - different somehow - each time we went out it  seemed  the air in the rear shockie had to be adjusted (no comments please!) and handling was a little different each time  (no consistency).  The Wing was actually getting to the stage of being unpleasant (heaven forbid) and felt dangerous at times to ride. Speaking to others in the group some said they had had a few problems and others had not had a problem but just crank up the pressure.

Time to do something drastic, Again the Wing comes apart, you know.... remove that seat and other bits open eyes and it is so easy to see the rear shockie covered in oil (in other words shockie not functioning at all). No leaks last time it was checked but things change quite quickly sometimes.  So a quick call to Bevan one Friday night remembering he said he had a spare shockie that maybe we could borrow while ours was rebuilt.  In luck.  Bevan and Therese kindly met us halfway between their place and ours next day (in the carpark of the wedding they were attending).  We got home put the Wing all back together in time to be picked up along the way, by a sea of beautiful colour for the Sunday ride the next day.  What a ride that was, the difference to the handling that shockie made was unbelievable. Better than when we first got our Wing.

Anyway thanks to Bevan and Therese over the next few weeks, with the borrowed  shockie we could still socialize and our original shockie was rebuilt, at the same time we fitted those great Dunlop Elite tyres and what a combination!  The Teale Wing is back to being a very pleasurable means of transport for socializing and being with friends again!

Two Irish hunters got a pilot to fly them to Canada to hunt moose. They bagged six. As they started loading the plane for the return trip, the pilot said the plane could take only four moose.

The two lads objected strongly. "Last year we shot six, and the pilot let us put them all on board; he had the same plane as yours." Reluctantly, the pilot gave in and all six were loaded. Unfortunately, even with full power, the little plane couldn't handle the load and went down a few moments after take-off.

Climbing out of the wreckage, Paddy asked Mick, "Any idea where we are?"

"Bejasus, I think we're pretty close to where we crashed last year."

Gecko’s rider briefing

Hinterland Ride

Hello to all the wingers! We had a good turn out for the August run, starting at the BP North we headed north up the highway with 10 wings and one make believe wing [sorry Wendy] and one new wing rider. Turning of at the Glenview exit from there we went in land towards the back of Mooloolah.

From here we journeyed through to Eudlo and from there back to Tanawha. As we rode along the C.B was full of talk and excitement, it was good to find roads we haven’t been on before. By this time we were a little bit early for smoko so we took a detour to show everyone the Maroochydore Botanical Gardens.

Then it was back to the Super Bee for morning tea. It was once thought that all honey tasted the same! Not true so our riders found out while tasted about twelve different types of honey. We were all soon shown up by the skateboarding birds who thought they really knew how to ride. There was much to see at the Super Bee Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the House that Jack Built and Goldilocks and the Three Bears! For those who missed the ride a good time was had by all. We spent an hour there at the Super Bee; the food was great and well priced. I did hear a few say they were coming back with the kids as Deb, Val and Thommo were seen having fun roaring around on the mini electric bikes!

But all good things come to an end, so we all mounted up and continued our August ride.

We headed around through Forest Glen to Chevallum then Palmwoods. Just west of Woombye where we came on the Blackall Range road heading up to Dulong and down to Nambour. Then we headed north to North Arm, I pointed out where I grew up and the old school house, then it was back to Yandina. We headed around the side of Dunethin Rock and up through Bli Bli on to the waterfront hotel for lunch. We all enjoyed our meal and thoroughly relaxed looking out over the canal and enjoyed the scenery.

From here everyone was invited back to Rusty’s place for tea and coffee before the journey home.

Kay and I hope that everyone enjoyed the day and ride. To those that made it, thank you for a great ride and lovely day as we all shared something very special together. We are grateful for the friendship and company we have found through this club, by far the most wonderful people that Kay and I have met. It is a great club, Thank you.

Till we meet again that’s all for now, RIDE SAFE!!

A truck driver breaks down on the freeway with a cargo of live monkeys on board, bound for Taronga Park Zoo. They need to be delivered by 9:00am and the driver fears he will get the sack if they don't get there on time. He decides to try and thumb a lift for his monkeys and eventually an Irish lorry driver pulls over.   "Where they going?" asks the Irish fella.  "Do us a favour mate and take these to Taronga Park Zoo for me" says the driver, "and here's a hundred bucks for your trouble."  "Happy days," says the Irish fella, loads the monkeys onto his truck and gets on his way.

The truck driver goes about trying to fix his truck and is there for good few hours when he notices the Irish fella coming back down the freeway, still with all the chimps on board.  Panicking, he flags him down again. "What are you playing at," he fumes, "I told you to take them to Taronga Park Zoo!"

"I did," says the bemused Irish fella, "but there’s still fifty bucks left so now we're going to Luna Park."

The Reconnaissance Ride

With the Goomburra Valley Camp Ground weekend coming up, I still needed to finalise a suitable route.  As usual, all those questions go through the mind; you know, how many, where is somewhere different, how much time have I got and so on.  The additional question this time was that there would be at least four trailers involved and I had not previously ridden the route I had in mind.  With all that in mind, what else could I do but go for a ride and check it out.  Now, you'll have to bear with me on this one because I don't want to actually disclose where we went as I will keep that for a future time.  Needless to say, due to

time and trailer constraints, we won't be using the proposed route on the weekend of 24/25 September.

Leaving home bright and early with Daniel on the back, I headed for Carindale to collect Trevor on his Bandit; the Valkyrie is still being punished for tipping him off; then across to Holland Park to collect Matthew, the first opportunity for a real Father and Son ride, where the son was actually riding.  This was also to be Matthew's first real ride of any distance.  After three months of cussing, spanner work and $, the Virago was finally performing as it should have went we bought it.

A quick bit of maintenance to put the screen back on and we were away.  I had played with taking the Deauville out but following the usual struggle through the traffic lights, once out on the open road I remembered why I'd bought the Wing in the first place.  Larry was supposed to be joining us but a change of his schedule meant he had to work instead.  Shame Larry, you missed a good ride.

First stop was Beaudesert for a quick retension of the screen mounts and onwards toward Boonah.  About 10 klm down the road and we encountered a few push bikes and the cars trying to get round them on an uphill double line section.  We handled that OK but it was a taste of

Doctor's Office

There's nothing worse than a Doctor's Receptionist who insists you tell her what is wrong with you in a room full of other patients. I know most of us have experienced this, and I love the way this old guy handled it.

An 86-year-old man walked into a crowded doctor's waiting room. As he approached the desk, the receptionist said, "Yes sir, what are you seeing the doctor for today?”  "There's something wrong with my old fella," he replied.  The receptionist became irritated and said, "You shouldn't come into a crowded room and say things like that."  "Why not?  You asked me what was wrong and I told you," he said.  The receptionist replied, "You've obviously caused some embarrassment in this room full of people.  You should have said there is something wrong with your ear or something and then discussed the problem further with the doctor in private."  The man replied, "You shouldn't ask people things in a room full of others, if the answer could embarrass anyone."

The man walked out, waited several minutes and then re-entered.  The receptionist smiled smugly and asked, "Yes?"  "There's something wrong with my ear," he stated.  The receptionist nodded approvingly and smiled, knowing he had taken her advice.   "And what is wrong with your ear, sir?"

"I can't pee out of it," the man replied.

The waiting room erupted in laughter

things to come.  We had found the Great Queensland Bike Ride!  What a shambles; bikes all over the oncoming lane, two and three abreast, towing trailers with little kids in; (funny how it's illegal to do that in a caravan or trailer behind a car), semi-trailers, cars, trucks trying to avoid them while travelling in each direction along the highway.  At one stage we came round a blind corner on a double line crest only to find a gathering point with cars and bikes all over the road and no warning what so ever.  Even later, we came across the two police escort motorcyclists stopped on the side of the road on another blind bend.  If nobody was injured on that ride then it must have been good luck, not good management.

We arrived at Boonah and performed a bit more maintenance on the screen mounts.                       ……..cont.

I must teach that boy how to tighten things properly.  Ever onwards we travelled, doing my best to identify unknown turns in sufficient time but the inevitable happened and quick braking and a right turn was required.  Not a good idea.  I could hear the squeal of a tyre being subject to forces not recommended by the manufacturer.  With a quick check of the mirror I decided discretion was the better part of valour and I accelerated forward, allowing Matthew room to stop.

He'll certainly keep his eyes open next time but I'm sure Therese would have had severe words with me if he had hit me.  Well, at least I'd lived up to our standards and incorporated the obligatory U-turn.  From here it was through some beautiful scenic country, a bit of wild life, a few cows and the inevitable deposits left in their wake and avoiding a wayward driver more intent on the scenery than any other vehicles that might be around.  I won't give away too much information but it was great

riding and a reminder of why we ride and enjoy biking.  Arriving at the halfway point we re-fuelled both ourselves and the bikes, discussed to options for trailers, recounted our individual adventures, admired the Bower birds, and then continued on our merry way.  The ride home was fairly uneventful and apparently boring as Daniel's helmet kept hitting mine each time he fell asleep.  That means I'll need to find a more interesting route for the second half of the ride.

Sorry for the sketchiness but I'd prefer to keep the route a surprise for another day.

Bevan.
