G’day

Great to see all the contributions this month, even if some are the ones I missed last month. It has made for a big magazine, so I hope you enjoy it.

We’ve had so many good rides in the past month that I’m getting into trouble for not getting all the jobs done around the house. What with cricket, watering by hand and riding, there’s not a lot of time for anything else. At least I’ve finally managed to get our new printer setup and working. Should be able to get the dealer magazines out this month and look to making the members calling cards for those who want them.

After the great weekend at Bikers Dream earlier this month, I have been asked to book the same weekend next year, but for the Friday and Saturday nights. That’s the 22/23 Sept 2006, so book your calendars now.

Like Clint, I’ve put the magazine together while trying to watch the racing. Great day of racing. It always is when a Holden wins. Not that there’s much difference between either race cars.

Happy reading.

Bevan

Hi all,

I’m typing this with Bathurst on the telly. Have those guys got skills or what?

What skills have you got? Racing drivers race in a protected zone on the track, we have to be out in the real world.

There has been recent discussion about how easy/hard it is to get a motorcycle licence. Here in Queensland, the Q-ride system allows a prospective rider to do a one-day course learning how to ride and then, if considered competent by a trainer, get a licence.

Sounds too easy? Well is several hours on the one day better than several disjointed single hours with the old driving school system? Maybe.

Another worrying problem is that nowadays, the bike shops are into Q-ride training and one might question whether there is some motivation for the business selling the bike to the customer to also be organising the licensing.

After some criticism at a recent meeting, one dealer is prepared to shows us what happens on Q-ride. A long-time friend of mine, John Petersen, is the principle of Pro Motorcycles. Under his control are Pro Honda, Pro Yamaha, Pro Kawasaki and Pro Ride. John has offered members of AWRA the chance to attend an evening where the Pro Ride instructors will give us a look at their methods and then test the competency of anyone who wants to give it a go. I’m going to as it has been many years since I have been licence tested.

Rest assured, no one will actually lose their licence, but we may find out what it takes to obtain a motorcycle licence in today’s world. Keep an eye on the Calendar for what may be an interesting evening.

Be careful out there

Clint

Hello everyone,,

Well, we have finalised our Christmas venue at The Entrance and as a result of a reconnaissance ride last week-end, we have found an excellent venue for our 2006 A.G.M. See ‘Committee Capers’ for the ride we enjoyed on Saturday 8th October.

Most important now is for us to get our deposit away to The Entrance, so please remember $20.00 per couple at our next meeting.

Thommo and I had a great time at Bikers Dream, but I am going to insist that if we are camping – we make it for two nights – setting up for one night only is too tough!

And we have to go back; it is a great setting even the snakes are friendly!!

See you all soon, and safe riding.

Montezuma’s Revenge

RustyandMaree’s (Michelle) Social Night

On Saturday night we met at 5:30 Shell Nudgee EricandDeb, ValandThomo, PhilandVicki, GeckoandKay, BillandMary Left the servo for Kedron to Montezuma’s Restaurant for our 6:30 booking .We arrived and BearandJayne met us there. LarryandAnnette were to also, but Larry had to earn a quid and worked too late to make it. TurboandWendy sent their regrets (other than that, the rest of you were noticeably absent). I think all but GeckoandKay and us of course, had a new taste adventure and I think they enjoyed it or at least lead me to believe that. Our raffle was won by MareeandI and BillandMary but before the evening started I had warned everyone if we won one of the prizes we were keeping it, it was Brown Brothers Port as

Mary chose the wine. After our free entrée because we were RACQ members, we all had our mains after a few cocktails were consumed by a couple of the ladies.

We then headed to Mount Cootha via the back way with Gecko on point leading the Motley crew. Once we arrived on the upward part of the mountain, Gecko disappeared into the night with all his lights ablaze. On top we all had coffees and dessert and enjoyed the company (well MareeandI did anyway) the Light from there reminded me of the River Fire a couple of weeks away and plans were set to ride to Brisbane again to enjoy the lights again. At about 9:30 we all said our good-byes and headed home. If you want any more information about the night you should have been there or ask one of us who was there and see what you missed out on.

Secret Santa and Raffle

If you are coming to the Christmas Party, don’t forget your Secret Santa gift. $5.00 value for someone the same sex as yourself.

Also, bring along a small donation for the hamper raffle

Pre-Christmas dinner gathering

As well as your Secret Santa and Hamper donation, bring along some finger food/nibblies for the socialising as we relax after the ride.

Of course, as riding is such thirsty work, so you may want to bring along some drinks as well.

Combat Veteran’s Poker Run

Saturday 5 August

It's 2:00pm and I'm out painting the Bali Hut, Vicki walks out with the phone and says it’s Rusty. After a brief discussion as to why he's ringing me instead of sending the same text message that he sent to others, he finally asks if we'd like to partake of a Poker Run on Sunday. It's being run by the Combat Veterans and starting at Ettamogah at 10:30am. That equates to a 08:30am departure from home, been earlier starts than that with the wingers so I guess we'll go.

Sunday

08:30ish and we're ready to go. A fresh ride up the highway and onto the Gateway, pull in at SHELL Nudgee for a top-up and on to Ettamogah. 10:15am and into the servo to fill the tank for the ride. Up the hill and approx 100 bikes are assembled in the car park. There to greet us was Rusty (minus

Maree) and Geoff and Julie. Registration taken care of and then a short wait and chat.

It was about 10:45 when the ride finally got out of the car park and Rusty and us left together, Geoff and Julie were a bit slow getting their gear on so were a bit behind at the start. A free flowing ride led to Woodford where our first stop was at the pub. As we pulled up the unmistakable colour of Geoff’s Wing was evident, (how'd he get in front?) seems there had been a gap in the riders and the front runner of the second group had taken a wrong turn, and everyone behind followed. A brief 30min stop and the 10 minute warning was given. On to the trusty steeds again and off to Maleny for lunch. A sausage sanger (put on by the Rotarians) and a coffee later and off again.

On again to Woombye and another stop at the pub for another card and coffee. While there some lowlife took ONE of Geoff’s gloves, just because it was a Harley glove. He somehow managed to retrieve the missing glove and off we went.

At a roundabout somewhere out of Woombye the confusion began again, some bikes doing a 360 around the roundabout, others turning left and some going straight through. As we had no idea where we were going we followed Rusty, (cause he knew where we were going.............NOT) and Geoff disappeared one of the other ways. We stopped somewhere and Rusty informed us that the last stop was at the pub ??somewhere??. We'll take the scenic route there. Got to the pub and no other bikes there, better go and check. The bar staff knew nothing of 100 bikes arriving so I guess we were at the wrong pub, maybe they were at the surf club. Checked that out and guess what, not there either. And of course neither of us has Geoff’s number.

We were just about to call it a day when Rusty’s phone rings (thanks to Saturday’s SMS) it's Geoff and they're at Kawana Waters, that's just down the road so we'll be there in 5. We arrived just in time to pick our last card (waste of time that was) and get the results of the run. The lucky winners were applauded and time had come to bid our farewells. While Geoff and Julie, Vicki and I headed south, Rusty headed north and on towards home.

A great day was had and the riding was superb. A day spent on the wing and the company of friends is all that one could want in life.

Proud to be a Queenslander

A Queenslander who was working on contract for 3 months in the UK, was drinking in a local pub in Warwick England, gets a call on his mobile phone. He hangs up, grinning from ear to ear, he orders a round of drinks for everyone in the bar, because, he announces his wife back home has just produced a typical baby boy weighing 11.5kgs

Nobody can believe that any baby can weigh in at 11.5kgs, but the Queenslander just shrugs, "That's about average in Queensland". Congratulations showered him from all around and many exclamations of "Christ almighty" were heard. One woman even fainted due to sympathy pains.

Two weeks later the Queenslander returns to the bar. The bartender says "You're the father of that typical Queensland baby that weighed 11.5kgs at birth. Everybody's been having bets about how big he'd be in 2 weeks. We were going to call you. So, how much does he weigh now?"

The proud father answers, "8kgs." The bartender is puzzled and concerned. "What happened? He weighed 11.5kgs the day he was born." The proud father takes a long s-l-o-w swig from his beer, wipes his lips on his shirt sleeve, leans onto the bar and says..............

"Had him circumcised mate"

Jayne’s Trivia

Hi everyone!

Charging Problem? (GL1500)

In my experience the most common problem of not charging in the ‘Wing alternators is the carbon ‘Brushes’. Carbon dust clogs up the channel where the brushes are supposed to slide freely and they stick up in the brush holder. A quick (on a Wing?) removal of the alternator - it’s on the left side behind the side cover - pull apart the alternator (marking everything of course) and usually dust will fall out. Clean slides and brushes (brushes should be replaced if down to the ‘wear holes’) – while the alternator is apart, spin both bearings to check for unevenness and replace these if necessary.

Now, you may have an ‘Open Circuit Rotor’ or a rotor that has ‘gone to ground’. To test this you will need a multi-meter. Place test probes on the brush slip rings and adjust multi-meter to an OHMS reading. 20 OHMS is ok. The reading should be about 4 _n_ OHMS. If there is no reading the rotor has an ‘Open Circuit’. If reading is high the rotor has ‘Gone to Ground’. Other repairs may be necessary.

If you do not feel comfortable to do these things, remove your alternator and take it to a repairer. Alternatively have a chat to me, (call or drop in), and I will try to advise the best plan of attack.

Remember your quick ‘Wing checks - oil, coolant, tyre pressure and tyres for wearandcracks and have a goodandsafe ride.

Happenings from the south

Well the Vic members have been very quiet lately due to the weather however the dinners still have been rolling along on a monthly basis. A few of us have been away on family related rides; John and Marg up to your part of the country, they intended to drop in on the Club meeting but did not get back into to Brisbane on the right day due to families gatherings; Karen and I went for a ride down to Port Campbell and for a couple of days made our way back to Melbourne, but as a group the weather has not been kind to us however we hope it is going to fine up in the next couple of weeks.

The GP is on this weekend with myself, Doug, Preeta, and a few of Doug’s friends going and camping on site. Should be a good weekend and I’ll have an article for the next Mag.

We have a ride on the 23 Oct and we are all looking forward to the 19 - 20 Nov for the overnight ride and BBQ.

That’s all from down south. hope this article finds all of you well safe riding.

John

Gecko and Kay’s September 18 ride

Yes, once again what a perfect day! Sun shining, blue sky and maybe just a little bit windy! I got sun burnt today, good sign of having to slip and slop; we won’t have to slap as we already have a helmet on. Anyway down to the ride.

Good start with 9 wings turning up, meeting at Shell Nudgee for some pre-ride coffee.

We all headed on to the Gateway south bound over the bridge after some hold-ups with road works. Turning left off the Gateway onto Lytton road down through Hemmant heading to the Port of Brisbane. We slowed it down as we had a slow car in one lane and a slow semi in front, the car turned right; here’s our chance I thought!

Bevan and Therese raced home and made morning tea up, very nice I might add, and a very big thanks to you both. Well, time to get back on the wings and head for lunch. Eric said his good byes, as he was heading home; Deb not feeling well at all and we all hope she gets back to good health soon. We’re off, heading for Redland Bay via Cleveland. As we passed Redland Bay pub I look over and it was a bit breezy and thinking to myself I said, ‘Thanks Bevan good call! Smoko at your place a much better idea! ’ Anyway we went South and then North and then a little West and ended up on German Church road. Suddenly I heard something from one of those red wings, something about us needing roundabout practice!? Yes Larry, we went straight through the roundabouts!

So out and around the semi I went! Bad move. The lane ended! I made it in front, but all the rest didn’t make it. I felt so alone by myself! Then I thought and said to Kay "Bill was behind me, maybe the others don’t know I am in front of the semi! They would be just following the white wing in front! We decided to skip going down around Fishermans Island, yep turn off up to Wynnum and along the water front. Still a slight breeze lots off people and the water looked lovely even inviting for a dip [too cold I think]. Through to Lota and onto Green Camp Road. Not far along and the C.B started, everyone was after some morning tea. As we turned onto Ricketts Road, Bevan called to me "Gecko where are we stopping for morning tea?". The Redland Bay Hotel was the reply. "We can stop at our place if you like" called Bevan. So yep, ok, we did a loop off Wellington point.

Unlike you on your ride, we had to go around the things and I mean around! By the way we passed through 20 of them.

Back to the ride. We headed along Mount Cotton Road, into Avalon road, lovely bit of road, nice twists and turns. Did everybody see the castle along the way? From there through Rochedale and onto the M1, south to Beenleigh. Then Larry took us along his race track! Very nice buddy. Then, through to The Waterford Club Hotel for lunch, we all enjoyed the meals and quick service!

Thanks to everyone for a great day

Gecko and Kay

PS Sorry we missed the port of Brisbane it was Kay’s choice not to go down, I was only there to go where I am told!

PSS And a very big thanks to BevanandTherese for their lovely morning tea

Another reconnaissance ride

Saturday 8th October and a few of us had arranged to head to north to Noosa and other points to check venues for the Christmas Party and next year’s AGM. Meeting at the BP North were Ray and Val, Bear and Jayne, Clint, Therese and I and we were joined by Trevor and Clare. We headed out of the servo and straight into a traffic jam which had all the signs of an accident ahead. Sure enough, there was the result of two cars arguing over the same piece of road. CB discussions had been on heading up into the hinterland to avoid the traffic but it cleared immediately after the accident so we stuck to the highway.

First stop was the Forest Glen Resort as a potential AGM site.

We did a thorough job on your behalf checking out the facilities with cabin, restaurant and conference facilities being checked along with the BBQ, pool and also the playground facilities with Trevor personally checking out the swings. From here it was onto Bli Bli to check out facilities at the Waterfront Hotel. Turns out there were three accommodation places,

the morning after. I tell you, the things your committee has to do for you. It’s not easy to sit out on a deck with a sea breeze, overlooking the river and associated activities while eating lunch and having a cold beer but someone has to do it.

With breakfast booked, it was back to Caloundra to drop Trevor and Clare off then across to Landsborough and south to Beerwah. From there, Clint led us on a merry chase to a café in the middle of nowhere that Thommo reckoned was only there to look after people who were lost, as that would be the only way you could find it. After iced coffees, it was back on the bikes and onto the highway and home.

It was a great day’s ride and while Bear and Jayne would have gone further, we had done around 360 klms by the time Therese and I arrived home.

none of which were the Hotel, and I have to say, after a thorough checking out, we decided the facilities did not meet the demanding standards of the group. I think the deciding factor was Thommo and Bear could not get access to a karaoke machine.

From Bli Bli it was on to Noosa and The Entrance Waterfront Resort to meet the new owners and confirm our dinner arrangements to ensure there is sufficient room for the Spit Roast cooking equipment. The ride up the coast was uneventful apart from Bear being able to have great CB conversations with the rest of us but unable to hear anything we said.

The roundabouts gave Trevor the opportunity to find the maximum lean levels of the Valkyrie, (and test the leather of his boots).

After checking out the facilities, it was off to the Yacht Club for lunch and to book us in breakfast

Biker’s Dream Weekend

Last month I told you about the reconnaissance ride for the Goomburra weekend at Bikers Dream. This month I’ll tell you about the actual weekend and the fact that we didn’t use the initially proposed route.

After months of planning and organising, asking, begging, e-mailing numerous members and receiving limited responses, the weekend had finally arrived. It was off to Goomburra. Thommo had already questioned why the late arrival time. My diabolical plan was to ensure that everyone would be still capable of being coherent at 7:00pm. With 30 confirmed participants there was the potential for a great weekend. After making very firm arrangements to meet Trevor and Clare, I still managed to leave Birkdale 10 minutes late; I must work on that.

Most of the group met at the Yamanto McDonalds for a1:30pm start to head south to meet those from the Gold Coast and Waterford at Flavours in Boonah. Great to see Lionel and Mary on the Goldwing again; this was their first ride of any real distance since the ride to Canberra in March. They had tried a couple of short rides during the week but here they were. Nothing like jumping back in the deep end. Turbo arrives and says that Wendy has not been well and they may not be coming later.

Rolling, 10 minutes late again, off to Boonah with the usual comments about the standard of the road work sections and the dust and mud

associated with the site and who would have to wash whose bike. Now, Flavours is just before the roundabout, I told Phil. It wasn’t, the sign approaching Boonah said to turn left at the roundabout. Well if I can read the sign then Phil should be able to also. Arriving to find Larry and Annette there we all dismounted and prepared to wait for the rest and I had hopes of getting on the road a bit sooner than planned as we no longer had to meet the Warwick/Stanthorpe contingent at Gladfield. They had decided they needed a head start on us. Phil and Vicky, Bill and Mary arrived and I started getting everyone moving. Too late, Bills got a sandwich and we have to wait.

Mobile again, only 5 mins late this time and determined to be on schedule, we headed up Cunningham’s Gap and arrived at Gladfield right on schedule at 3:10. Following a scenic route through farming country to the

metropolis of Goomburra, not, we turned right and headed for the camp ground arriving at around 3:45pm where we were met by Verna. She sent the campers to one end of the park to be met by the Warwick/Stanthorpe contingent already in camp and enjoying a cold ale while the rest of the non-campers were sorted into the bunk-house and given undercover parking for the bikes. Campers were unfolded, tents erected and air beds pumped up. This action will be pondered in the morning and the non-campers arrive to gloat, as they have already unpacked their tooth brushes.

Everyone headed for the main area to get sorted out, enjoy the hospitality of Dean’s bar and the socialising snacks that had travelled in the panniers. Prior to dinner, there was a threat that no-one would get any until there was agreement on breakfast. It was agreed that breakfast would be served at 7:30am. This seemed a reasonable compromise between 6:00am and 9:00am.

After a beautiful evening meal of roast cooked in the camp ovens, everyone settled in for an evening of quiet relaxation.

Well that could have been the plan if Bill had not put movies of fast motorcycles on the TV. This led to the discovery of the karaoke machine and its associated CDs. What followed was much frivolity and great entertainment lead by Hans, Bear and Thommo; although I seem to recall that Clint, John and a few others may also have been involved at various times. Danny Boy never sounded so.., so…, so…., different!

At one stage there was great consternation that a wild gorilla and pig had carried Thommo and Bear off, but it turned out that they had taken their day masks off and appeared in their true colours.

The singing was accompanied by the partaking of a few drams of port, for medicinal purposes only of course, to assist those in such a highly stressed state to relax and sleep.

At some particular time people started to drift off toward the bunkhouse in an attempt to get some sleep.

Being beside where the singing was in progress, this was always going to be difficult. With great concern for our well-being, Mary C decided that it was best if we all stopped the singing and went to bed before she attempted to.

This process involved numerous "misinterpreted" invitations about which bed people were being asked to go to sleep in. Eventually, having given up, Mary headed for bed and was probably sleeping soundly when Thommo and Bear decided to end their singing performance with full voice Christmas Carols in the bunkhouse. Those who settled into their tents at a reasonable hour were later, much later that is, fully reassured of their security in the wild when the lilting (giggling) voices of our intrepid entertainers were heard as they returned from what had obviously been a gruelling period of alert watchfulness over their mates to protect them from any more wandering gorillas and pigs.

Sunday morning saw the cups of tea and coffee prepared early before breakfast and a gradual awakening of the camp as we all headed toward the kitchen for a hearty breakfast.

Breakfast was followed by the need to break camp, again accompanied by gloating from the softies from the bunk house.

All plans to leave were then thrown into disarray as two wings, having done sterling duty the night before on the air bed pumps, refused to start due to low battery voltage. With push starts undertaken, gear, riders and pillions loaded, we said farewell to Dean, Darryl and Verna and headed for the highway.

With some heading back over the Gap or south to

Stanthorpe, the rest headed off for a run to Gatton via Heifer Creek. After re-fuelling in Gatton, it was on to the De-Lish café in Laidley for a late smoko/early lunch With some taking the direct highway route home and other going via Rosewood, it was the end of a great weekend that seems to have been enjoyed by all. So much so, that I have been asked to set it up again for next year, but to do it over the Friday and Saturday nights. See you there!

Bevan

Committee Capers

Saturday 8th October 2005.

We have a Saturday ride because tomorrow is Bathurst Day, and certain people have to watch the race! Strangely for me I was up and making a cuppa at 5.30 am (it might have something to do with being eager to be on the road before the heat we were expecting), but I was looking forward to this ride as well. Ray was just getting the bike out of the garage when Bear and Jayne arrived – so we were really doing well and we were on the road at 7 am. We arrived at the BP Caboolture at 7.45 am and shortly followed by Clint, BevanandTherese, Trevor and Clare and we really enjoyed the coffee. Our itinerary was to follow the highway and call into the Forest Glen Resort first, then the scenic

route to Maroochydore to check out Harbourside Resort, the Coach House Motel and then on to our Christmas venue - The Entrance Waterfront Resort, and to source a breakfast venue for the Sunday morning. At this point I really wondered if we would achieve it all today.

TrevorandClare have finished their breakfast, and we are off – Clint is leading the way and Thommo is tail-end charlie, we are on the highway 8.40 am. Whoops, the traffic is almost at a stand-still, we creep along to find that it was an accident involving three vehicles – nasty, but it looked like only the cars were hurt. Now the highway is moving, and in no time at all we pull into the Forest Glen Holiday Resort – 4 x 4 Group. We park in front of the administration building, seemingly no water restrictions here with sprinklers

keeping the grass looking lush and green. We get a map, keys to access to cabins and we set off walking through leafy parkland, swimming pool, playground and we check out the cabins. We are all impressed – plenty of room to ‘party’ Trevor tested the swings, and Therese and I had to stop Bevan and Thommo from making their way to the slippery tubes! The conference room is huge, and Bear kept asking about the Karaoke Machine. There is a Restaurant on site – for our evening meal, and barbeques available – possibly our breakfast.

Bevan is convinced we do not have to look any further – but we vote to check the others. Back on the highway, Clint showing the way, and we have the most enjoyable ride around the coastline of Buderim, Coolum on to Maroochydore.

Here we pull into the Maroochydore Waterfront Hotel, checking out the Coach House Motel and adjacent facilities: First group of cabins did not offer a conference room or meals; second facility – same, no conference room and not enough units to accommodate our group; third facility was the Coach House Motel which initially looked hopeful with a large eating venue which we could hire for our meeting – BUT the units did not appeal. So, we mounted our shiny machines and headed for Noosaville with very optimistic statements from Clint and Bevan that we would have no trouble finding our Noosaville Resort.

Ha Ha – we did our second obligatory u-turn for the day, and we circumnavigated 2 extra roundabouts on our scenic way to the Entrance Resort! Here we met Jackie and checked the Wings club in, we took the opportunity to confirm our cabins – which are Nos. 8; 10; 11; 12; 14 and 15. We also reminded Jackie to cancel the sprinklers for us that Saturday evening – she was quite amused that we didn’t want to have that feature again! On Jackie’s recommendation, we checkout the Noosa YachtandRowing Club for our Sunday Breakfast venue. We did – we had a very enjoyable lunch on the deck, overlooking the Noosa River – what a delightful spot. We are booked in for 8.30am breakfast – Sunday 27th November – phew – we did it. All our requirements have been finalised folks – now it is just confirmation, deposit and look forward to party!

With Clint still leading the way we follow the coast down through Caloundra – this is where we said good-bye to Trevor and Clare, and we cruised down through the glasshouse mountains on roads where Thommo claimed they would only find our bones if we were lost! However, our trusty leader Clint magically pulled into an isolated café, in the middle of nowhere, called the "Wander In" with spectacular views and friendly hosts, and we enjoyed a huge Iced Coffee, soft comfortable chairs and country sounds of birds and geese (no – Xmas dinner). Still could not believe that we had achieved everything with such ease, and such a glorious ride – what a way to spend a Saturday. We continued down quiet off the highway roads until Caboolture, and this is where we said good-bye to Clint and BevanandTherese, while we pulled into the garage for BearandJayne to fuel up for their trip home.

What a great day we all had, thank you to you great bunch. It really ended up being very easy decisions after all. Listed below are all members for the Christmas Week-end, remember – you can ‘swap’!
