Growing old

I've sure gotten old. I've had two bypass surgeries, a hip replacement, and new knees. Fought prostate cancer and diabetes. I'm half blind, can't hear anything quieter than a jet engine, take 40 different medications that make me dizzy, winded, and subject to blackouts. Have bouts with dementia. Have poor circulation; hardly feel my hands and feet anymore. Can't remember if I'm 85 or 92. Have lost all my friends. But, thank God, I still have my driver's  license.

The Secretary’s Desk….

G’day everyone

Well, here is the March mag.  A bit late I know.  Any later and I could have called it April’s.

It was great to get away for a couple of weeks and enjoy Tasmania.  And enjoy it we did.  I haven’t heard of anyone who was disappointed in the trip.

For Therese, it was her first Ulysses AGM and longest ride on the wing and she enjoyed herself and the atmosphere and the touring around the apple (and blackberry and plum) isle.

Best part was, all the members of our group returned home safe and sound.  That’s always a bonus on these trips.  Admittedly I did try to tip Therese off at one stage but that’s a story for next month.

Thanks to everyone who submitted articles.  When I got back I didn’t think we’d have a mag but the usual suspects rallied around.

Next month could be a bit lean, so start writing those tall tales and let everyone else enjoy your ride, if only from their arm chairs.

The deadline for next month is Friday 7th and I’m still missing some stories.

Happy reading.

Bevan

Hi all,

(Between AGMs and playing with his trucks, the President has been away more than the Communications Officer and has no words of wisdom for us this month)

Clint

Hello everyone,

Well our club activities have been varied this month with a lot of members travelling to Tasmania, and the remaining members revelling in Coffs Harbour.

Pleased to see that most of the travellers have arrived home safely, and now looking forward to seeing you on Saturday for the Deck B.B.Q.

It looks as if it is going to be inclement weather for the week-end so we may not be able to take the ‘wing photo’.  But I am sure I will get plenty of practice with the digital camera – watch out!

Important reminders:

·       Membership renewal due

·       Book into North Star Resort at Hastings Point for our A.G.M.

·       Committee Members nominations

·       Items for the A.G.M. Agenda

·       Raffle Prizes donations for our A.G.M.

·       Christmas in July in Stanthorpe Saturday 1st July 2006.

Ride safely and see you soon.

Duties of a new wife!!!

Three men were sitting together bragging about how they had given their new wives duties.

Terry had married a woman from America, and bragged that he had told his wife she was going to do all the dishes and house cleaning that needed to be done at their house. He said that it took a couple days but on the third day he came home to a clean house and the dishes were all washed and put away.

Jimmie had married a woman from Canada. He bragged that he had given his wife orders that she was to do all the cleaning, dishes, and the cooking. He told them that the first day he didn't see any results, but the next day it was better. By the third day, his house was clean, the dishes were done, and he had a huge dinner on the table.

The third man had married an Australian girl. He boasted that he  told her that her duties were to keep the house cleaned, dishes washed, lawn mowed, laundry washed and hot meals on the table for every meal. He said the first day he didn't see anything, the second day he didn't see anything, but by the third day most of the swelling had gone down and he could see a little out of his left eye.

Enough to fix himself a bite to eat, load the dishwasher, and call a landscaper.

Victorian ride on Sun 19 March 06

Well due to some of the Victorian members away on the Ulysses AGM and some other having other plans it was only a small group of three that went to Echuca for lunch. The morning started over cast and as we left the city we thought we were in the middle of winter as we crossed over pretty sally near Kilmore, Karen was asking if I had brought  along the winter jackets, as the clouds closed in I thought I had made a mistake as I was only wearing a T shirt under the leather jacket and it was getting cold. However as we travelled further north it was getting warmer and by the time we reached Heathcote for morning tea it was warm and all were happy. After a bite to eat and a hot chocolate we headed towards Echuca, with a steady stream of hot rods coming out of Echuca we thought we must

have missed a hot rod show as sometimes they have on the weekends on the Murray.

The town was very busy as all of Melbourne must have got away from the Male and Female Marathons that were running in Melbourne as part of the Commonwealth Games.

With the bikes parked we walked the streets as you do in Echuca for the ladies to spend more of the there hard earned money, with that done we settled down for some lunch and a bit of street watching as every second car was a Hot Rod or Harley, some people but great effort in restoring the old cars to bring them up to be a real show piece.

With lunch over and a walk back down the street we headed back to Melbourne with a short break in Heathcote again so ends another good day on the bikes.

The Future

Last night, my wife and I were sitting in the living room and I said to her, "I never want to live in a vegetative state, dependant on some machine and fluids from a bottle. If that ever happens, just pull the plug."

She got up, unplugged the TV and then threw out my beer.

Coffs Harbour run - we can have fun anyway!

With all the arrangements made to meet at BP Stapleton on Saturday morning (11th) we headed off.  Already there before us were KevinandMorag, the others were not far behind PaulandSherrie and The Thommos.   We had decided to just travel straight down the highway and come back the inland road.

Four Wings left Stapleton and on the way through at Mudgereba we picked up two more - Meady and his wife Mikiko, and Scott and his wife Irene.  A little stop here to meet the girls, then continue on.

The next little stop was at Ballina (Macca’s of course) for a cuppa and stretch.  Next stop was supposed to be Grafton, as BearandI had never been down here we missed it!! A little stop by the roadside and on to Town Lodge Motor Inn at Coffs Harbour, we chose this location as friends from Rosewood now own it and we were pretty much coming for a visit and decided to see if others wanted to come as well.

Phil and Tracey were already there in the pool.  They had been there since the afternoon before.

A friend (Peter) of the Thommo’s met us there as well with his trike and ‘teardrop’ caravan.

All settled in we headed down the street for some lunch and ate at the Funky Fish - quite nice. GeoffandScott and the girls had a better offer for lunch (Geoff’s Aunty) so they met us back at the motel afterwards.  Paul and Sherry finished their lunch and headed off to get some headache tablets - they obviously worked as we didn’t see them for the rest of the afternoon!

The rest of us wandered to the supermarket to get some supplies and head back to the motel via the bottle-o to sit around the pool and relax.

Thommo and Bear, being the usual obnoxious larrikins they are, were testing the pool water and patience of all. However not a drop of their precious flavours was lost in the water, even after Thommo took one step too many backwards and landed sitting up drink high in the air into the wading pool!

Where is the video camera when you need it?

All present and accounted for, we headed to dinner and frivolities at the Chinese Restaurant right next door.

Bob and Fran made us all feel really welcome so after dinner back at the motel we re-arranged the  furniture  - as we do - in the forecourt,  and chatted  for a while.

Fran now wants a Wing not a caravan!

Jayne’s Trivia

*     elephants are particularly fond of beer and other forms of alcohol

*     ants cannot chew their food. they move their jaws sideways like scissors to extract the juices from the food

*     there is a butterfly in Africa with enough poison to kill six cats

*     dogs and bees smell fear

*     when possible cats like to sleep with their backs up against something. they do this to protect them from someone or something coming up behind them.

*     the kangaroo family dates back 30,000,000 years

Next morning after photos, thank yous and farewells to BobandFran we headed off. Meady is from the area so he led the way to the Harbour for breakfast. What a beautiful harbour it is!  He also gave us a little tour including the lookout and a great little picnic spot.

Peter gave Mikiko and Irene a thrilling ride on his trike at the Lookout before he headed home.

We headed for home through Grafton, some one else was leading so we didn‘t miss it.  Had to have a little stop here to stretch and have a drink, also GeoffandMikiko and PaulandSherrie were heading home straight up the highway.  The rest of us headed through Lismore and Kyogle.  Small rest stop in Kyogle to stretch and have a drink - quite hot today.

On to Rathdowney and parting of the travellers. It was here we came across HansandGwenda from Stanthorpe. They were in a tin top today with rellies and they only recognised us because of Valerie’s Pink Pony Tail Ribbons!!!

Anyway farewells said and done, BearandI headed home past Maroon dam and Boonah.  The others headed up the Mt Lindsay Highway.  All agreed it was a great weekend and of course can’t wait to do it again.

Thank you again to those who came with us and it was so nice to meet the ‘other halves’.

Take care

GL1500 vs GL1800

After now having completed over 10,000 klms on the GL1800 in 6 weeks, and having done 32000 klms on the GL1500 in the previous 11 months I am probably in a position to give a fairly detailed appraisal of the differences between the two bikes.

The GL1500 was an 89 model so has some klms up and I will keep this in mind.

1.    Appearance:- The first and obvious difference is in appearance and as this is a personal thing I wont go into it much suffice to say that both bikes draw there own fair share of comments from other riders, kids and the general public. Generally these comments are good and show a lot of interest.

2.    Storage space:- Well as we were packing the GL 1800 for Tassie and the decision had to be made to leave the hair dryer at home all I can remember hearing was, "why didn’t buy a decent sized bike, that bl----y things to small".  First and last time I've heard of a Goldwing being called to small but as we never had to leave anything behind with the GL1500 it does show a negative on the part of the 18.

3.    Weight:- The 1800 weighs 40 kgs lighter and feels like its 140 lighter. Simply a much lighter nimbler bike to ride handle and manoeuvre. First impressions were correct. This bike rides like a sports tourer not like a big bike at all.

4.    Power and Brakes:- I put these together because its no good going if you cant stop. The 1800 goes and it stops, not that I could fault the 1500 but this bike has great smooth power from whoa to go. It has ABS but not once in 10,000 ks mostly of tight twisting roads did the ABS have to operate but then I believe if the ABS cuts in the Rider/Driver has failed in their responsibility to maintain control of the vehicle. (I don’t like ABS on Cars or Trucks and this being my first ABS Bike the jury is still out on that one).

5.    Noise:- Hmm there is always a negative and this is definitely it. The 1800 fails here in two places. It is a noisier engine than the 1500 and that to me is disappointing. Also far more wind noise. This would be because of the smaller fairing windscreen assembly but this is acceptable due to the better handling trade off. Also more wind noise means that the rider is getting more air. To me that is a huge positive as I did tend to overheat on the 1500.

6.    General:- The intercom and stereo on the GL1500 is acceptable although why in this day and age of technology any manufacturer would use a live mic system amazes me. This alone makes it almost impossible to get rid of wind noise however as I said the 1500 is acceptable. The 1800 however is terrible and a backward step in function. Its that bad I am looking at an aftermarket system to replace the original. Same goes for the stereo, for quality and poor volume control.

7.    Comfort:- They are both Goldwings need I say more. Yes I think the 1800 has the edge.

So back to the boss and the bigger bike what does she think after 10,000 klms on the back. Her comment on being asked was maybe next time I’ll just keep the hair dryer on my lap all the way to Tassie.

As for me I love the 1800 even with its couple of negatives and won't be looking back.

Cheers

Geoff

AT THE DOCTOR'S OFFICE

A gorgeous young redhead goes into the doctor's office and said that her body hurt wherever she touched it. "Impossible!" says the doctor. "Show me."

The redhead took her finger, pushed on her left breast and screamed, then she pushed her elbow and screamed in even more. She pushed her knee and screamed; likewise she pushed her ankle and screamed. Everywhere she touched made her scream.

The doctor said, "You're not really a redhead, are you?

"Well, no" she said, "I'm actually a blonde."

"I thought so," the doctor said. "Your finger is broken."

Coffs Harbour – a brilliant week-end ride

Our Coffs Harbour week-end ride was brilliant.  There really is nothing better than preparing for a ‘whole’ week-end away, meeting up with our wing friends and enjoying a fantastic ride.

Thommo had our bike sparkling, and we met BearandJayne, PaulandSheree and KevinandMorag at the BP Stapyleton for the first stage of the ride down the Pacific Highway.  Our first stop was to meet and greet GeoffandMakiko and ScottandIrene at Macdonalds at Mudgeeraba, where we continued our cruise down the highway.  There wasn’t too much CB chatting as we soaked up the glorious views (and my CB button is broken), and it was still fairly early.

Breakfast stop at Macdonalds Ballina was very welcome, and our first opportunity to socialise.  I have to own up to a ‘blonde moment’ as Morag witnessed my frantic search for Thommo’s wallet in my handbag.  Ordering breakfast while Thommo organized seating, I couldn’t find Thommos wallet – PANIC – I will have to tell him!  Only to be told I had handed it over to him when I was combing his hair!  After my panic moment, the baconandegg McMuffin tasted wonderful, the coffee was even better.  Then on the road again.

The coast road is glorious and not too much traffic.  BearandJayne were cruising well ahead, and we took a few sessions to catch-up making Meady move along (we started to think that his speedo was playing tricks).  Anyway, we were looking at fuelling up and having a quick stop at Grafton – whoops, no we didn’t – Bear kept on the highway oblivious of the turn-off at Grafton, so we kept going, and going, and going.  Where’s a petrol station?  Shell up ahead announced Jayne, and we faithfully followed, saw a rather dubious Shell sign, pulled into a now deserted fenced off station.  But we made it a rest spot, stretch and catch-up chat time for us who are not talking on the CB.

On the road again, our next stop will be Coffs Harbour and we pull into BobandFran’s Motel.  Great spot, right on the highway and we are cheerily greeted by a very wet and sunny PhilandTracey.  While I am putting our bags in our room Thommo arrives with a stubby in his hand, courtesy of Phil.  “I’m ready to party”.   At this time we are joined by Thommo’s mate Peter Luke who had ridden down on his trike towing a very interesting Tear Drop trailer – so a lot of boy talk and show-&-tell stuff followed.  Eventually we decided a walk to a nearby café for lunch was the go, and on the way back we called into the bottle shop for extra supplies.  Jayne was organising ingenious ways to carry extra ice back to the motel, and I just wanted to sleep!  Which I did, I was blissfully sleeping while Thommo was entertaining/clowning around the pool.  From the reception I received when I joined them all later, and with Thommo being totally wet inside and out – he was having a good time.  Totally encouraged by Bear and Phil I must add.  Possibly to make Thommo less obnoxious, Makiko gave him an impromptu neck massage, and he visibly turned to jellow.  With instructions that he must try this with me – see later.

Several suggestions for our tea arrangements were made, however, Meady’s recommendation of the Chinese Restaurant was our final choice and it was an excellent venue.  Just a dozen paces across the street, and we feasted on an excellent Chinese Banquet, and I began my quest to master the digital camera and take some very much needed photos of the clan.  What a great bunch, it was about this time that we realised that we had a Kindy bunch in our midst.  MeadyandMakiko, ScottandIrene and PaulandSheree – we definitely felt we had to censor our conversation with these kids around.  We struggled back to the Motel, and then had our obligatory pow-wow circle to finish off a wonderful day.  It had been a long day, and we filtered off to our rooms fairly early – 10-30pm.  After strong protests from most of us Bear agreed to a 7.30 am. Queensland time, start in the morning.

8.30 NSW time, we were assembling in the Motel courtyard, and again I was doing the camera ‘thing’.  You would be proud of me Charleen – I think!  Plenty of photos were being taken, Motel customers were having a look at the bikes as well.  Then we were saying a very special thank you to BobandFran for their hospitality, and it was up and away for breakfast.  We were heading for the wharf, and just only 500 metres down the main road we (and BearandJayne) were caught at a set of lights.  We lost the group – we received a quick message from Kevin to keep straight and head for the wharf.  Weeeel, we sort of kept straight, then we turned into a main street, wrong.  We did the obligatory U-turn, and looked for water, and we saw some familiar figures waving in the car-park.  In the meantime, Paul had set off to find us – so then we were all standing on the kerbside waiting for Paul!  Sheree was abandoned – Paul was really lost!  No – all is well, he joined us and we all trooped into the Wharf café, with a magnificent look to the harbour, excellent service and great food.  Again, our Kindy Group formed their table and we continued our ‘adult entertainment’ on our tables.  We were not in any hurry to leave, we were all so relaxed it was with a great effort that we rallied to get on our bikes.  Morag found shops – I eagerly followed and we have made a secret pact to come back with our wallets next time!

Next chapter – Meady took us all on a scenic tour around the coastline, up to the lighthouse lookout.  This is where Peter Luke took Makiko and Irene for a scary spin on his trike.  I don’t know who looked more relieved when they stepped off the trike, MeadyandScott or MakikoandIrene?   I took a bunch of photos, and it was here we said good-bye to Peter.  Meady continued his tour and showed us a very pleasant picnic spot.  Then, rather reluctantly it really was time to start heading for home, via Kyogle.  We cruised up the highway and pulled into Macdonalds at Grafton, mainly to say good-bye to MeadyandMakiko and PaulandSheree who were travelling back up the coast for home.  I think I hugged everyone at least two times, and safe riding.

Then we were off onto the Summerland Way with KevinandMorag leading the way.  Beautiful scenery again, and when we pulled into Kyogle for a stretch and drink Bear was looking very uncomfortable.  Irene to the rescue – she gave Bear a back massage and he looked distinctly a lot happier when we set off again.  Now we really are travelling in the country, and heading for Mount Lindsay where the road is all wiggles and sharp curves, but again great views.

We pulled up at Rathdowney for our final farewell.  Stretch and a cold drink was very welcome, and we get a surprise hello from HansandGeorgie (Stanthorpe) they were visiting family.  Small world, and we reminded Hans to notify us about their Xmas in July event.  More hugs and this is time to head for home from a wonderful week-end.

Thanks Bear and Jayne for a memorable time, and thanks to all of you who made this such a special time for us.  Thommo can make his own apologies!

See you all soon

ValerieandThommo.

The Bathtub test

It doesn't hurt to take a hard look at yourself from time to time, and this should help get you started. During a visit to the mental asylum, a visitor asked the Director what the criterion was which defined whether or not a patient should be institutionalized.

"Well," said the Director, "we fill up a bathtub, then we offer a teaspoon, a teacup and a bucket to the patient and ask him or her to empty the bathtub."

"Oh, I understand," said the visitor. "A normal person would use the bucket because it's bigger than the spoon or the teacup.

"No." said the Director, "A normal person would pull the plug. Do you want a bed near the window?"

Dealing with the law

A farmer named Clyde had a car accident.  In court, the trucking company's fancy lawyer was questioning Clyde. "Didn't you say, at the scene of the accident, 'I'm fine,'?" asked the lawyer.  Clyde responded, "Well, I'll tell you what happened. I had just loaded my favourite mule, Bessie, into the..."

"I didn't ask for any details", the lawyer interrupted. "Just answer the question. Did you not say, at the scene of the accident, 'I'm fine!'?"

Clyde said, "Well, I had just got Bessie into the trailer and I was driving down the road...."

The lawyer interrupted again and said, "Judge, I am trying to establish the fact that, at the scene of the accident, this man told the Highway Patrolman on the scene that he was just fine. Now several weeks after the accident he is trying to sue my client. I believe he is a fraud. Please tell him to simply answer the question."

By this time, the Judge was fairly interested in Clyde's answer and said to the lawyer, "I'd like to hear what he has to say about his favourite mule, Bessie".

Clyde thanked the Judge and proceeded, "Well as I was saying, I had just loaded Bessie, my favorite mule, into the trailer and was driving her down the highway when this huge semi-truck and trailer ran the stop sign and smacked my truck right in the side. I was thrown into one ditch and Bessie  was thrown into the other. I was hurting, real bad and didn't want to move. However, I could hear ole Bessie moaning and groaning. I knew she was in terrible shape just by her groans. Shortly after the accident a Highway Patrolman came on the scene. He could hear Bessie moaning and groaning so he went over to her. After  he looked at her, he took out his gun and shot her between the eyes.

Then the Patrolman came across the road, gun in hand, looked at me, and said "How are you feeling?"

"Now what the hell would you say?"
