In a Vacuum

A blonde was playing Trivial Pursuit one night. It was her turn. She rolled the dice and she landed on ScienceandNature. Her question was, "If you are in a vacuum and someone calls your name, can you hear it?" She thought for a time and then asked, "Is it on or off?"

Dog Names!

A girl was visiting her blonde friend, who had acquired two new dogs, and asked her what their names were. The blonde responded by saying that one was named Rolex and one was named Timex. Her friend said, "Whoever heard of someone naming dogs like that?" "HELLLOOOOOOO......," answered the blond, "They're watch dogs!"

The President Speaks….

The Secretary’s Desk….

G’day everyone

Well, here it is, another magazine put together.  Finally, all contributions are in, I’ve written a story to fill a big gap, searched my jokes to fill in the smaller gaps, just have to have my proof reader do the final checks and I can publish it for your enjoyment.  I don’t know how it happens but each month I think that it won’t take much to put it together but it always seems to.  At least there’s satisfaction when it’s done.

The weather may have got a bit violent yesterday but at least the summer storms bring some much needed rain.  Shame they have to bring damage and hurt to some people as well.  Life can be a bit like that at times I suppose.  I was reviewing “The Secretary’s Desk” and thinking of great rides we have then Val having to go through a shoulder reconstruction, then I reviewed “The President Speaks”  and we have Clint with calf muscle problems.  We have to learn to take the good with the bad and remember the sun always shines through in the finish.

Speaking of sun shining through, it’s a beautiful day outside and “The Secretary’s Desk” reminds me there are two bikes in the garage that need a clean and polish before the ride on the weekend

‘Till next month,

Happy reading.

Bevan

Hi all,

Just noticed a two-day-old email request from Bevan for this article.  My apologies, but I have been waylaid.

After a great weekend with a few disgraceful Ulyssians, it was back to work on Monday.  Then while crossing a busy Sydney road during a rainstorm, I was attacked by the local traffic.  Swerved across two lanes to try and get me he did.  But I was too fast – just.  But the high-speed super-human action of leaping for the relative safety of the footpath was too much for my tired old leg muscles and the left calf muscle now has a 7cm tear.  Didn’t half hurt I can tell you.

But I still managed to hobble to where the truck was and drive it home.  They say in space no one can hear you scream.  It’s the same in a truck.

Yesterday was all doctors, sonograms, blood clots, hospital emergency rooms etc etc.  They do carry on.  And they can be scary too!!

All is OK however as it was determined the clot was caused by the injury rather than the other way around and it is only in a small vein anyway, the large deep ones are clear.  No DVT. Good to know.

So here I sit, only a Wing Owner for a couple of weeks, rather than a Wing Rider.  Won’t be working with trucks for a little while either. That’ll let me catch up with some overdue computer work, starting with answering emails.

Ride safely out there – they are out to get you.

Cheers

Clint

Hello everyone,

Quite a busy month for us.  We are finalising the Christmas Party week-end, and trust everyone who can make it has booked in at the Waterways Motel Resort, Bribie Island by now.

Sorry we didn't make it for the last club ride, as we missed out on both a very enjoyable ride and meeting up with our Victorian members - what a long way to come for a sunny ride!  However, we should be at the next ride, our wing is all polished and we are ready to ride.

Update on my shoulder - at 40% with physiotherapy and hydrotherapy and yes, I am working hard with it.  Additional result I have lost weight with the exercise regime, but do not recommend my reason for same!

This week-end I will be wrapping Christmas presents, I love Christmas time.

See you at the next ride, meeting - meanwhile stay safe.

Love.

ValerieandThommo

Christmas Party Secret Santa

Don’t forget, if you are going to the Christmas Party on Bribie Island, you need to take along a Secret Santa gift to a maximum value of $10.00.  Men bring a gift for a man; Women bring a gift for a woman.

Make sense?  See you there.

Father Murphy walks into a pub in Donegal, and says to the first man he meets, "Do you want to go to heaven?" The man said, "I do Father."  The priest said, “Then stand over there against the wall."  Then the priest asked the second man, "Do you want to go to heaven?"  "Certainly, Father," was the man's reply.  "Then stand over there against the wall," said the priest.  Then Father Murphy walked up to O'Toole and said, "Do you want to go to heaven?”  O'Toole said, "No, I don't Father.”  The priest said, "I don't believe this. You mean to tell me that when you die you don't want to go to heaven?"  O'Toole said, "Oh, when I die, yes. I thought you were getting a group together to go right now."

4200km in 4 ½ Days

The thought and idea started back in Sept 04 when the first ride for the Victorian members had a visit from Clint Charleen, Eric and Deb. This again was rekindled just recently when Clint suggested cheekily that we should come up for a ride some time. John and I looked at each other and so the process started. A couple of days later I asked John and Marg what about a ride to visit one of the Qld rides?  He was good for the ride, as most retired people are with time on their hands, for me it was a little harder, and for Karen it was impossible; so I asked for time off work and it was all approved. In the mean time we looked at the calendar and selected the 15 Oct as it looked like the most interesting ride.

About three weeks out from the ride I put my bike in to have a small annoying leak looked at and found that a seal needed replacing at the rear of the motor, no problems I thought, and Reg Jeffrey ordered the part and all was in order to get on our way as planned. As the day drew nearer the part had not come in and it was looking touch and go. Chris Jeffrey offered me a YELLOW wing as a ride if the part did not come in so I was happy that I had a back up plan. A couple of days out the yellow wing was sold. I thought for a second, great I will not have to ride a YELLOW wing, however this then created the problem I might not have a bike to ride, after a discussion with the mechanics at Reg Jeffrey, I decided to take my bike. With a couple of back up plans in place thanks to Chris Jeffrey, and Honda rider assist, I thought I would be OK.

The day prior to the ride I get a phone call from Clint telling me he was in Melbourne picking up a vehicle, I tried not to give the ride away and asked about the ride for the Qld group and he proceeds to tell me the ride leader had sold his wing.  I inquired about what happens and Clint indicated that the ride would go ahead.

Some well travelled wings

Clint on arrival

Some well travelled wings

Not wanting to ask too many more questions as why would a Victorian be so interested in the Qld ride, I hoped that the ride was starting from the same place.

Also I was hoping Clint was not staying over night which would mean we would pass him on the way up next morning. Luckily he was leaving that same day which would put him a day ahead of us.

The morning of the ride we got away early at around 0630 and headed north.  We new this was going to be a long and quick ride and the usual stopping was not going to happen.  The first leg was around 300 km with a break for fuel on the way. As we crossed over the border into NSW and heading into the hotter parts of NSW the temp was stating to rise 28, 30, 35, 36 and rising. As the temp was rising it caused us to have a few drink breaks along the way with the first night of Dubbo well with in our sights we pulled into Dubbo for a well earned cool down and sleep.

The next day saw on our way early heading for a early day to Toowoomba. John B outside Dubbo had a bit of a disagreement with an emu with John B winning this time, however I think the emu will come with some mates next time.

As I have not been passed Boggabilla the ride up thru that region was new and it took some of the mind of riding and my ever increasing saw ars#%^#%^.(I usually head inland and go up the New England).

Today saw us getting into Toowoomba to John Bs’ dad’s

place around 3.00pm. Again for a rest and a good Jim Beam and coke. We were now in place to head down to the start point on the Sunday morning.

We decided to get an early start again and headed towards the start point, arriving to a startled Clint, as it started to sink in that these crazy Victorians had come up just for the ride. We had our briefing and headed for a great ride over the mountains and I don’t think the wings hit a straight bit of road until well into the afternoon, a few left at the lunch spot and the rest of us rode the rest of the afternoon over some great roads. The day ended with a cuppa at a flower shop (the only flower shop John B has gone to without buying any thing; that did not stop Marg from trying to persuade me to take some plants back on the bike as I had more room). As the day drew to a close, we headed back to Toowoomba for a rest before heading out the next day back to Melbourne.

The return journey was back the same way with caution near Dubbo in case the emu was out for revenge. The first leg home saw us stopping in West Wyalong and heading home the following day with us arriving home at around 2pm looking forward to a well earned rest before heading back to work on the Wednesday.

Was the idea that was thought of two years earlier which came to fruition two years later worth it? Yes we all put our well earned money into buying the biggest tourer in the world yet half of us don’t get the opportunity to use it for what it was intended so any opportunity to do same thing like this and ride in comfort is worth it.

From John G, John B and Marg

This ended a great trip, in great company, on perfect riding roads, thanks to all those that rode on the ride in Qld for making us feel welcome and part of a bigger family. And if ever you are down this way or get the urge to do something crazy, there is always a spare bed at either of our places

Evidence of a great Weekend at Goomburra 2006

See if you can match the comments/pictures with the stories in last month’s magazine!

1.     Thommo found the huge tree he was hugging just toooo slippery to hold him up!

2.     Bear went over to help him up but it was just too much for him leaning over like that and over he toppled to stay there as well!...... Only for a short time until BevanandPhil (W) helped both of them up, then carried Thommo to his chair next to the tent. I must add they did very well for they were not that steady either on their pegs either.

3.     Valerie and I tried to get the ‘obnoxious’ pair to have some coffee and quieten down as other campers near by were asleep. “But Jayne Bevan has more port left and we want it!”....“Be quiet Thommo he is asleep and there is none left!!”

4.     Finally.. peace, leave them where they are to sleep. So we (ValerieandI) covered them over to keep the dew and cold off them....see? we care....So Valerie and I took this opportunity to have a little wander ourselves a short distance away (30metres?) and you would not believe it, we could hear them laughing and giggling and they had had a power nap! We ran back to find them huddled together, sneaking across the

paddock, in the dark, to go and get the port and Bevan!!

We hassled them around and managed to get back to the tent and got the cranky voices happening and made them go to bed...we had had enough!!

5and6.   Saturday night’s Karaoke was a little more sedate. Can you tell?

Wish there were more pictures for you, like Thommo asleep on the guard rail around the communal bon fire, or Bevan end up in the bin! (What a story that is!). Friday night’s karaoke, John (Z) helping the trees to grow (Saturday night), but hey, next time you’ll just have to see it for yourself!

Fun always,   Jayne

Last minute ride

I’ve almost completed the magazine for November but I have this area of white screen that needs filling.  No story on the October ride that Bill had to take over at the last minute due to Rob Steer selling his bike so I thought I’d put fingers to keyboard as I already had some photos to go with it anyway.

Sunday 15 October dawned a beautiful day, perfect for a ride through the mountains so we packed up smoko and lunch and headed for the Shell at Nudgee to meet up with the others.  Arriving, not even late, we refuelled while pondering a couple of strange ‘Wings parked with the group.  New members maybe?  A quick over and the Victorian number plates were a give away and I realised it was John Gilbert and John Brak.  Turned out Margaret was also up.  Just a weekend ride apparently to return a visit to Melbourne by our members a while,

back.  It was also good to see Mary and Lionel back after their overseas jaunt.

After greeting everyone, especially those we hadn’t seen in a while, those who had not packed lunch purchased sandwiches and whatever else was needed it was back to the bikes for a briefing and on the road.

Heading north we entered Caboolture and immediately hit the Sunday morning market traffic.  Bit hot sitting still so Bill employed some typical motorcyclist traffic jam avoidance methods and followed by a quick detour we were soon on the way to Landsborough riding past Australia Zoo where I’m sure everyone’s thoughts were on the tragic events of the recent past.

Through Landsborough and on to Mary Cairncross Park for smoko overlooking the beautiful Glasshouse mountains.  A cup of coffee, scones etc, a good social session, a quick check that the horses had enough water and everyone was back on the bikes and performing a quick lap through Maleny.  This is a beautiful town and is still showing its determination as the new Woolworths centre had about 3 cars in the car park.  Someone suggested that they were probably owned by the staff.

On to Montville and then down the range via a back road to Palmwoods.  Every time I ride this section of road I really enjoy it.  The sweeping and tight corners

and the view overlooking the Sunshine Coast is great.  It’s also a fun stretch of road for photographs.  Therese had a ball hanging off either side of the bike to get a good shot.  I’m sure some of the lines I was taking raised the eyebrows of those following but I was just trying to position the bike for a clear shot of those in front.

From Palmwoods it was back to past Landsborough and on to Beerwah where we turned right avoiding the unfortunately empty beer carton and headed west to Peachester then back south to meet up with the D’Aguilar Hwy and head east to Woodford.

The ride was a mountain ride and so far the corners had been a ball so that had to continue.  Turning south at D’Aguilar we then headed over Mt Mee, very sedately of course, and into Dayboro.

The plan was to then travel over Mt Glorious and lunch at one of the parks on the western side but with time starting to advance and some people’s stomachs beginning to think that

their throats had been cut, the decision was made to lunch in Samford.  With the bikes parked, there was a quick rush to grab the only available table which just happened to be in a great shady spot for a very enjoyable lunch and drawing of the raffle.  If I could remember who won the prizes I’d tell you but sorry, the old memory fails me.  I know it wasn’t Therese or me.

From Samford, the plan was to cross Mt Glorious and then head through to Marburg so our Victorian members could then head up the highway to Toowoomba ready to head back home on Monday morning.  Larry and Annette and Phil had other commitments and so turned left to Brisbane and home while the rest of us refuelled for the last leg of the ride.

Now Therese has never been overly thrilled about the effects of my tossing the ‘Wing from side to side through what are some of my favourite twisty roads, so I thought she had done quite well with the photography thing earlier. I read somewhere a suggestion that the queasiness may result from the extra height of the pillion seat and therefore the greater arc through which the pillion swings.  Anyway, since the photography session we had also come across Mt Mee and had lunch so, with Mt Glorious beckoning Therese decided that she had had enough, and that Mt Glorious would not be an enjoyable time so unfortunately we also dropped off the ride and headed for home.

I gather the last legs of the ride were as good as the earlier ones so it was a shame to miss it.

Thanks Bill for stepping up to the plate and leading the ride and thanks to John Gilbert and John and Margaret Brak for coming up from Victoria to spend the Sunday with us.  If you are reading from front to back, you will have read John’s story by now.

See you round

European 1800 Trike

This Gold wing trike was one of a group of Gold Wings we saw in Germany. They were stopped for a coffee break, same as we were.

We chatted to them as best we could with our lack of their language. Luckily a couple of the fellows could speak English and I was carrying a photo of our Wing which we showed them.

Needless to say this was just one of heaps of great experiences we had. We had a great time.

Mary and Lionel

Fred and Mary got married but can't afford a honeymoon, so they go back to Fred's Mum and Dad's for their first night together. In the morning, Johnny, Fred's little brother, gets up and has his breakfast. As he is going out of the door to go to school, he asks his mum if Fred and Mary are up yet.

She replies, "No". Johnny asks, "Do you know what I think?" His mum replies, "I don't want to hear what you think! Just go to school."

Johnny comes home for lunch and asks his mum, "Are Fred and Mary up yet?" She replies, "No." Johnny says, "Do you know what I think?" His mum replies, "Never mind what you think! Eat your lunch and go back to school."

After school, Johnny comes home and asks again, "Are Fred and Mary up yet?" His mum says, "No." He asks, "Do you know what I think?" His mum replies, "Ok, now tell me what you think?" He says: "Last night Fred came to my room for the Vaseline and I think I gave him my airplane glue..."
