The Secretary’s Desk….

G’day everyone

Well, it’s the Saturday before the ride and I’m still trying to put the magazine together.  Finding articles, pictures, cartoons and jokes to fill the pages to keep you all entertained.  I should have the final articles in hand by the time we get home from the breakfast in the morning. With no meeting next month, I ask you all to get your contributions in for a January magazine.

Of course there are distractions in this process as well.  It’s Christmas, which means trawling through the crowded shops trying to get ideas and purchase gifts for family then wrapping the purchases and getting them under the tree.

And it’s raining.  What a beautiful sound.  Although it has not been a good day for some in south-east Queensland with wind again being destructive, even with the small amount of rain we are getting, I can only hope that the residents of the endangered towns in Victoria and Tasmania are also getting rain as it is desperately needed rain to dampen the fires in the surrounding bush to reduce the hazardous situation before any more fire fighters and killed.

From Therese and myself, I wish a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and yours and look forward to another year of great rides and the company of good friends.

 ‘till next month,

Happy reading.

Bevan

Hi all,

I think I mentioned somewhere recently that some of those crazy Americans have been trying out car tyres on their GoldWings.  Sounds weird I know, but those who have done it swear by them.  There are also a lot of nay-sayers as you might guess, but none I’ve read who have actually tried it.  Certainly makes some interesting reading.  Someone even went to the trouble of slinging a camera under their bike to film the car tyre as it lifts off one side whilst cornering.  Made interesting viewing, but where was the other side of the argument?

So yesterday I decided to try it out for myself.  I attached my Canon to a bar and slung it under the centre stand, bungeed to the seat.  Sort of worked but it was hard to get the camera to keep going for any time and if it switched off during a ride, it didn’t complete the processing and no result.  Several runs around the block and we had only one that worked but was aimed wrongly.  Another small try and we got it aimed but I then noticed that the road had taken a chunk out of the camera.  Time to give it away before I need to buy yet another camera.

Result was a 37 second film where I start off, do about 20 metres, a U-turn then back to the start.  Not much but it does show the contact patch of a “proper” motorcycle tyre so people can compare.

People must be interested because in the single day since I posted it on YouTube and advised a couple of GoldWing forums, it has had 420 visits.

The debate over car tyres still rages on the internet but at least I have done my bit.

Lots of ways to enjoy motorcycling in this day and age.

Merry Christmas and a happy 2007 (I think they’re naming it Year of the Bond)

Cheers

Clint

Hello everyone,

Ho! Ho! Ho!  Our Christmas week-end at Bribie Island was delightful.  The motel situation was excellent, and the meals at the RSL were very good value.  A great way to see 2006 end, and looking forward to 2007 with you all.

I have just filed our December 2006 minutes and correspondence away, and labelled the 2007 file already - I wonder what the new year has in store for us?

Thommo and I will not be on the December breakfast ride, but we will be keen for our wing ride in January that is for sure.

My article on our Christmas week-end will be reasonably short, mainly because I am now panicking about getting my Christmas cards ready, and my decorations must be up tomorrow night ready for our week-ends festivities to follow - where does the time go.?

Thommo and I wish you all a very 'Merry' Christmas, safe and happy holidays, and look forward to seeing you all in 2007.

Safe riding everyone.

ValerieandThommo

Bribie Island Capers.

We are only going away for two nights, but the bike is bulging under the strain of our bags.  The top box is dedicated to the ‘bar requirements’, and even though I had kept the Secret Santa presents reasonably small, and the Raffle Prizes small – my evening sandals had to stay behind!

Finally we were on our way at 2.30 pm Friday afternoon, but the traffic was a nightmare.  What normally takes us 45 minutes, took us 1.1/2 hours to the BP Caboolture – and another hour to our destination the Waterfront Resort Motel!

It didn’t take us anytime at all to unpack, change into casual clothes and Phil’s veranda was the meeting place.  The bar was open, and again ‘magically’ delicious nibblies appeared and the festivities began.

The RSL courtesy bus was very convenient, and we were duly chauffeured to our evening meal – Thommo did try and get us singing “the wheels of the bus go round and round” but without Deb to coach us along with the words we failed miserably.

Thommo had a T-bone steak and all you could hear was mmmm!  I chose the fish – and that was excellent.  Great value together with the FREE bottle of Red which is the special deal for Tuesday and Friday nights only-bonus.  We didn’t waste time though, (someone – we won’t mention Thommo’s name) was very keen to get back to base and socialise at the bar!  Once back at Phil’s verandah we were treated to a demonstration of moonlight fishing,

said goodnight.

Now this is where Thommo and I faded, we departed at the Cinderella hour of midnight and without too much information, we had a great night’s sleep- and slept in ‘til 10 o’clock.  We might have slept longer, as we were roused from our slumber with our mobile phone ringing!  We discovered that those party animals – Carters, Rusty’s,andPhil W. carried on till the wee small hours of the morning.

We had time to wake-up and Thommo was starving so our mission was to find the local shops – again we were encouraged to ‘walk’ by Mary J.  No moonlight or alcohol this time, but a walk along the waterfront was a pleasant thought.  Discovered that the ‘Emerald Kids’ (MikeandMaree) had disappeared, so we fanatic four set off down the road.  It was a very enjoyable stroll I must admit, and almost on cue Mary J mentioned that we hold our hats with the strong breeze when my hat took off and landed in the water!  To the rescue – Thommo!  He precariously climbed down the rocky wall and retrieved my hat – what a hero!

Back at the motel, and I was trying to muster everyone into one common place, and we were chatting in the Fishers kitchen, then in the Zanatta’s kitchen, then outside the Westerhout’s unit and then finally we sat on our little balcony with the Jacobson’s eating our banana sandwiches – Yumm – I have so missed bananas.

No sooner was lunch over, Thommo opened the bar and our wing members starting arriving at a fairly regular rate and last but by no means least the Bradford’s arrived to our welcome cheers.

with plenty of instructions from Phil M, and Doug.  After Phil had lost 3 prawns together with the hooks Mary J. suggested we should go for a moonlight walk along the waterfront.  Was it the moonlight or the alcohol?  But most of us were duly convinced that it would be a nice change, so off we trekked across to the park walkway.  Was it the moonlight or the alcohol?  But in no time at all MaryandLionel were on the rocking horses, GwendaandGeorgie were on the swings and Hans and John joined in as well!  We left BillandMary C on a park bench??  Doug marshalled us along to walk to the bridge and Thommo added the swing around the post or you would be a wimp!

We arrived safely back at Phil’s verandah only to be invaded by a couple of local lads who had followed the Carter’s, I seriously think they thought they could join our party!  But after a few howdy-doos, and what is your name they thought better of it – and

the Bradfords?  Meanwhile, Thommo is being Santa and distributing the clubs present of a gift bottle of Port to everyone.  This was delayed as I had left it too late to collect the bottles from Reception before they locked up for the night, last night.  Again I apologise for this delay, but my trusty President Clint reckons it was a very wise ploy – he believes they would have been opened if they had been presented during the evening festivities!

We make ready to make our way to the Bowls Club for breakfast, and the Bradfords appear!

It must be noted that we (Friday night revellers) witnessed the members riding past the motel entrance, having to do the obligatory u-turn and riding back to the entrance on the second attempt.  Question – did anyone make the entrance at first attempt?!

Saturday night was almost a repeat of Friday night, with 3 shuttles in the RSL courtesy bus and we made ourselves quite at home on our 4 tables.  Again, the food was tasty – Annette’s steak should have been glorious after the extra long wait for it!

Took this opportunity to run the Raffle, and took the tickets around.  Sue Boyles (our Badge supplier’s wife) was the official Raffle Drawer and First Prize was won by John Reid, Second Prize won by Larry Fisher – congratulations to the winners, and thank you to all members for making the Raffle donations - $65.00 was raised.

Back to our party – and it really is a great way to relax and due to our expanded numbers we were invited to set-up on the Harpers lawn, where we made a huge pow-wow circle.  We did try to encourage musical chairs, but it was left to us few social ‘animals’ to circulate – and we certainly did that!  The Secret Santa’s were ThommoandJayne for the boys, and CharleenandTherese for the girls.  It is a great way to spend our week-end, we did chat and giggle right into the small hours of the morning.  Hopefully we wished everyone a very merry Christmas before they started to slip away.  In particular the kids from Emerald who had to catch a very early flight home.  Also, the Madjerics, Merlos and Rusty’s were going on a toy run in the morning – we partied on!!

But we had to call it a night/morning – and we (Jayne and I) again had a difficult task of getting Bear and Thommo and Bevan to say goodnight.  Also, they were being encouraged by our ‘bad girl’ Michelle – luckily Therese was there to encourage Bevan the night was over!

Our week-end is nearly over, we are packing the wings and it has just showered!  But it was soon over, and then it became very humid – no sign of

We are off to breakfast, and it was an excellent meal, and as usual we are rather reluctant to make it end.  However, it is time and those of us left are on the highway and heading back to reality.  An uneventful ride home, just a very pleasant ride after another brilliant week-end with our dear friends – thank you for such a memorable time.

Sorry for those who couldn’t be with us – we did mention you during the week-end so we did think of you!

HAVE A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS – SAFE AND HAPPY HOLIDAYS – AND SEE YOU ALL IN THE NEW YEAR.

Book Review

“Affluenza-when too much is never enough” by Clive Hamilton and Richard Denniss

I had this book recommended to me and when I read it I was totally wrapped in the message it conveyed. I have bought my own copy and hope to circulate it to anyone wishing to read it.

Its basic message is that western countries, in particular, U.S.A. and Australia, are suffering from a disease where we have become greedy and just want too much. Reading this book has given me a feeling of contentment I have long sought. It has made me realize that marketing tries to make you dissatisfied so that you buy more and more to feel complete. Thoughts I have long had have crystallized and I no longer think “how Can I get a high by acquiring some material possession”. I just love the idea of this book that happiness is obtained by developing your talents, building up relationships, and following your set of moral beliefs.

This is all probably over simplified, but I think it is a great read and ever since I read it I have seen articles that agree with the philosophies expressed in this book.

RIVER WALK

There's this blonde out for a walk. She comes to a river and sees another blonde on the opposite bank. "Yoo-hoo!" she shouts, "How can I get to the other side?" The second blonde looks up the river then down the river and shouts back, "You ARE on the other side."

Victorian Ride

Over night ride to Corryong  -  19/20 NOV 06

Sat 19 th

With the day dawning to a chilly Melbourne morning we knew we were going to have a great ride out of Melbourne as each of us headed to the meeting place at Reg Jeffrey Honda you could just tell it was going to be a great ride. As the ride for the day was going to be around 500 km we headed out at 0730 am, from Reg Jeffrey it is only a short ride up over the Dandenong Ranges and the Black spur, anyone that has done that ride at that hour would know it is about the closest one can be to heaven, ( I know, forgot I was writing this for Queenslanders except for QLD) the sun just flickering through the trees, favourite music in time with the corners a light cool breeze before a hot day winding and scraping your way over the mountain as we toped the black spur and down the other side it was time for a break and a cuppa.

After the break and a good catch up for the girls we headed towards Whitfield for another great bit of road, the road in between was like a rest before the next set of orchestra on wheels. Over the top and with the first glimpse of the Victorian and NSW Alps we head down the other side and through the wine and mustard country for another break for lunch at Milawa.

On leaving Milawa we head towards Albury passing through Myrtleford and turned towards the mountains with a slight detour (I must trust my GPS in future) after getting back on track we found our way to Corryong for our overnight stay.

Start point at Reg Jeffrey

Milawa stop for lunch

Hume Weir

With the guys tasked to get the refreshments we head towards town to visit the local watering hole to get some takeaways after sampling the local brew we headed back to get together for a few yarns and tales before heading off to dinner at the local pub. With our stomachs full we headed back to the motel, some headed straight to bed for a good night’s sleep and others stayed up for a few more tales.

Sun 20th

Sunday saw all of us up for a late breakfast; the eggs on toast were excellent and we headed home around 9am.  The route home saw

us heading further out towards the mountains and then turning north towards the Murray River and the Hume weir which is looking very low, after a break at the Hume weir we headed out to the highway and straight back to Melbourne. As we arrived back in Melbourne and each of us peeling off to our homes I am sure we all reflected on a great weekend with great riding and good company.

Nothing to do with Wings (or Utes)

On Sunday ‘22 May 06’ we did a club ride from BP Stapleton, an excellent ride and a great day with a great bunch, thanks to Bill and Mary, but that’s not my reason for getting onto the ‘puter and writing this.  Those on the ride may or may not have noticed a gaggle of utes assembled at the rear of the BP, like us, refueling, coffeeing etc and assembling prior to their ‘day out’.  My beautiful daughter Kim and her betrothed Steve (one day he might marry her) were amongst this group of young utility owners self named ‘PRO-UTES.COM.AU’.  (Yes they have a web site, committee etc and an organization as we do)  Steve is one of the founders of their club so was there from the inception and continues to promote an interest in the vehicles they enjoy, but more importantly, a social environment conducive with their interest.

Whilst riding up the mountain, that day I couldn’t help thinking about the similarities between pro-utes and the AWRA.  Yes, we’re all oldies with our kids out of the way (you lucky bastards) and aiming towards retirement, whereas pro-utes are mostly young’ins heading

towards having families, mortgages etc and yet are out there enjoying the social side of a similar interest, as we do.  They are primarily in their 20’s and 30’s and although most of their vehicles are Holdens and Falcons the club is open to any street ute (i.e. no BandS cow chasing cowboy utes) so I guess my ‘ol untidy black VS’ ain’t welcome.

Pro-Utes have a strict code of conduct as to their behaviour both on the road and at social gatherings which is something I’m proud to have recently experienced.

Trace and I recently attended a fund raiser organized by Pro-Utes (Shave for a Cure) it was attended by about 30 of their club members at Steve and Kim’s house, a couple of utes drove up from Canberra and Sydney from memory (ring any bells??), the evening consisted of pre-dinner munchies, dinner, alcohol and the shaving/waxing etc of various parts of the boys bodies.  It was a great evening with many,

many laughs as these big boys experienced the agony of hot wax on their chests and the end results of green, pink or no hair on their shiny heads.  I mentioned alcohol above and am proud to point out that I’m surprised at how responsibly these kids drink and in a lot of cases don’t drink at all as most would rather take their cherished ute to a function than do the ‘taxi/blinder thing’.

I’m not assuming our members have not experienced behaviour from their kids that makes them proud, I’m just saying that when you’re overtaken by a ute with gorgeous metallic paint, chrome wheels and a Pro-Utes.com.au sticker on the back window give them a wave and give a thought to this article coz they aren’t necessarily hoons out to break laws and run amuck, hell some have bikes and might be Ulyssians or Wing riders one day.   (Note: Steve and Kim also has a VT750 with a custom paint job to die for, which they show).

I guess my point is that no matter whether our interest is a Wing, an old Dodge, or a ute it can be the social side of any club that makes owning your vehicle so much more enjoyable, and like us, these kids do it right.

Anyway, these were some of my ponderings on that Sunday whilst trying to keep Ruby and Trace upright and reflecting on good friends, good times and good roads.

Keep the shiny bits upright and enjoy life.

Ed: My apologies to Phil, this article should have been published back in August but it got “lost”

After marriage, husband and wife become two sides of a coin; they just can't face each other, but still they stay together.

Quick Thinking

A college teacher reminds her class of tomorrow's final exam. "Now class, I won' t tolerate any excuses for you not being here tomorrow. I might consider a nuclear attack or a serious personal injury, illness, or a death in your immediate family, but that's it, no other excuses whatsoever!

A smart-ass guy in the back of the room raised his hand and asked, "What would you say if tomorrow I said I was suffering from complete and utter sexual exhaustion?"

The entire class is reduced to laughter and snickering.

When silence is restored, the teacher smiles knowingly at the student, shakes her head and sweetly says, "Well, I guess you'd have to write the exam with your other hand"
