Remember: “Bikes get you through times of no money better than money gets you through times of no bikes.” —Phineas

This guy needs a job and decides to apply at the zoo. As it happened, their star attraction, a gorilla, had passed away the night before and they had carefully preserved his hide. They tell this guy that they'll pay him well if he would dress up in the gorilla’s skin and pretend to be the gorilla so people will keep coming to the zoo.

Well, the guy has his doubts, but Hey! He needs the money, so he puts on the skin and goes out into the cage. The people all cheer to see him. He plays up to the audience and they just eat it up. This isn't so bad, he thinks, and he starts really putting on a show, jumping around, beating his chest and roaring, swinging around. During one acrobatic attempt, though, he loses his balance and crashes through some safety netting, landing square in the middle of the lion cage! As he lies there stunned, the lion roars. He's terrified and starts screaming, "Help, Help, Help!" The lion races over to him, places his paws on his chest and hisses, "Shut up or we'll BOTH lose our jobs!"

The Secretary’s Desk….

Gidday all,

With one week to go to our AGM I hope everyone is ready.  All the necessary information is available in the Member’s area of the web site.  You should make yourself aware of this.

Those of us that attended the Ulysses AGM in Coffs Harbour had a good time and it was great for quite a few of us to finally meet our only NSW member in Frans Van Der Merwe.  Frans came up from Wollongong and joined us for a few drinks and coffee after the parade.  See the photo on the previous page.

There’s nothing quite like the Ulysses AGM for an opportunity to catch up with friends from around Australia, use the opportunity to test ride a wide variety of bikes in a short time and to enjoy social opportunities without having to ride home afterwards.  For those that stayed on the grounds at least and I still believe this is the best way to really get the atmosphere of the AGM.

Great to see Winston at the AGM; his “first??.”  And see him we did, everywhere, even though he wasn’t staying on the grounds, he organised bike access and no matter where you went, there was the “Lexus on Two Wheels”, usually being washed and polished by someone other than Winston.

Keep the black bits on the bitumen and the shiny side up,

Bevan

Hi all,

Well this should be my last report here as someone else will be taking the reigns for the next club year.  I have enjoyed my year, although it seems much longer.

I will do up more of a review for the AGM.

We had a great time at the Ulysses AGM and I did ride the GoldWing there occasionally.  But to get there and back, all the Wing riding was done by Charleen.  She is much more comfortable with the ergonomics of the 1800 that she was with the 1500, with the lower seat and handlebar placement.  In fact whilst following her up the range to Dorrigo on the CBR I remember thinking, this is quite fast enough for me.  It appears the really tight corners are more to her liking than the open sweepers.  The rest of the ride home was fine, but she would have preferred her first ride down Cunninghams to be in daytime.

We’ve always considered the GoldWing to be “our” bike rather than mine or hers.

Hope you all who went had a great time as well.

See you at our AGM

Cheers

Clint

Hello everyone,

Well it is 12months today since my spill off our Wing, strange that it seems a long way away, but at the same time – it has gone by rather quickly.  A lot of events during that time, and now here we are with our A.G.M. to look forward too.  The filing has been done; the A.G.M. Minute Book is ready together with the Register for the week-end.  Now Thommo has to find extra room on the bike for the Raffle Prizes (I might have to leave a pair of shoes behind)!

The Ulysses AGM in Coffs Harbour was great, see short story inside, and the evening social ride last Saturday with Meady and Kyle was a delightful treat – thank you Meady.  It was a lovely starry night, and the seafood restaurant was an excellent venue, good price, good food and very efficient.  The ride down to Point Danger was fun, I couldn’t fit either an ice-cream or coffee at the Greenmount stop and probably a wise move as Doug almost caused a riot at McDonalds!  I’ll let Doug tell the story.

Now our next project is to find a Christmas Party venue, so back on with the ‘thinking caps’ please, and start looking.

In the meantime, have fun and keep safe.

See you soon.

Dream Time

The alarm woke me at 4.15am, (that’s very early for those who don’t know) Thursday 17/5/07  Jeez I hate getting up in the dark..  Did everything one must do in the mornings, then it’s time to go.  Check everything as I walk out the door, just after 5am. Nose clean, phone, hanky, undies, wallet etc.

Climb aboard and away I go into the dark, heading north.  Not much on the Gateway this time of the day.  Check out the lights of the City and River from the top of the Gateway Bridge.  Not Bad, air fresh but nice.

Hit the BP North at Burpengary just on 6.00am.  Stop to stretch the legs and check a leak.  Leave the BP heading for Glasshouse, smooth running in the morning air.  On the left the first of the mountains like a huge carving, (can’t remember its name) with a wisp of mist around the top like a halo. On then to Beerwah, looking looking.  Big mower on left, no early birds on the dew covered golf course.  On and on past Australia Zoo.  Not much happening there this hour of the morning.

Turn left in Landsborough, past the Museum Sign, (must go there one day, Family heirlooms).

Up the mountain I go, beautiful road, no sunshine as yet. Very slow trip up (bloody trucks) closer to the top cows and horses starting to move.  I see a lookout, pull over stretch the legs, can’t see much, too many bushes. On and up through the section that is always a couple of degrees cooler to the Big Keg Winery. Too early for wine tasting.

Past the keg around the next bend looking to the right, a misty view to the sunshine coast with sun glistening across the water. To the left a strange yellow strip stands out on the rich green grass. Closer inspection reveals a ray of sunshine squeezing between two trees.

Turn right onto Maleny-Montville Road through Balmoral Ridge, down through what I call The Big Dipper all the time looking left to the tranquillity of the country side. Right to views of the Coast from Caloundra to Maroochydore with the sun now laying across the water turning it to a sea of orange. Amazed by the rivers of mist flowing around the valleys and small townships, some with smoke lazily rising from their chimneys. Past Lake Baroon on the left covered in so much mist they have formed into clouds. Up through a deserted Montville. It’s amazing what you can see without all the people.

Still looking left and right almost in a dream, turn left into Flaxton Mill Road, left again into Old Mill Lane, Ahhhhh what a place, bacon and eggs wafting through the air.-- RightO air brakes on, unload the bloody machine; you have a Pool to dig.-- What a run, even in a truck.

Annette always says the best time to be out is early morning; this would have been a fantastic ride on the WING. Maybe we could get a few early rises to join us one morning, I’m sure we could find somewhere to eat bacon and eggs instead of smelling them.

Who’s game?  LARRY.

Mother’s Day Ride 13 May 07

Who would believe that us Victorians would be riding on a beautiful day in May, well Sun 13 May saw us meeting outside Frankston where Steve was to take us for a ride around the bottom part of the Flinders peninsula outside Melbourne over roads that most of us had not travelled before. Our first stop was Arthur’s seat for morning tea and then we moved on around the coastal edge to Loddens Bridge.

After a break we then started to head back to Steve’s place for a BBQ lunch. The roads were very scarce of traffic which made for a very enjoyable ride. The pics from the ride do not do the day justice as the sea was as blue as the sky and the weather a warm 22 degrees.

On arriving back at Steve’s and with BBQ cooked (thanks Sharon for the salads and the desserts) all fed it was then time to head home.

Again another day was over of good company and great weather which makes for a good riding day.

Three old guys are out walking.

First one says, "Windy, isn't it?"

Second one says, "No, it’s Thursday!"

Third one says, "So am I. Let's go get a beer."

 *****

A man was telling his neighbour, "I just bought a new hearing aid.  It cost me four thousand dollars, but it's state of the art. It's perfect."

“Really," answered the neighbour. "What kind is it?"

 "Twelve thirty."

*****

A little old man shuffled slowly into an ice cream parlor and pulled himself slowly, painfully, up onto a stool.

After catching his breath he ordered a banana split.

The waitress asked, "Crushed nuts?"

“No," he replied, "arthritis."

An elderly couple is beginning to notice that neither of them seems to be able to remember things as well as they used to. So, they go to see their doctor, who explains that there is nothing really wrong with, just typical memory loss associated with old age. He suggests that they each get notebooks and write notes to themselves to help remember things.

The couple goes home and that evening while watching T.V. the man gets up and heads for the kitchen. His wife asks if he can bring her some ice cream when he returns. He says he will, and she says he should write it down. "I’m just going to the kitchen, I'll remember." "Well, I want that with nuts, too." "O.K. he says ice cream with nuts." She asks again if he's going to write it down. "No, I'm just going to the kitchen." "And a cherry on the top?" He agrees and turns toward the kitchen again and she asks again about writing it down. Now the old man is angry, "Look, old lady I'm not senile, I can remember ice cream with nuts and a cherry on top."

He goes in the kitchen for 10 minutes and when he returns he sets a plate of bacon and eggs in front of his wife. She looks up and says, "Honey, you forgot my toast."

WILD HOGS” and Madrid, New Mexico

A couple of days ago I remembered that Jack and I had not made good on our promise to Clint to send him some photos of the little village of “Madrid” in New Mexico where some of the main scenes for the movie “Wild Hogs” took place.  I know we also talked to Dave about the movie, and I believe the subject came up while John and his Gold Wingers were taking us for a ride around Melbourne.

The thing is that Madrid is only about 40 miles from my home, and a few more miles from Jack’s home.  I ride through Madrid about half a dozen times a year, since it is on my way to various northern New Mexico and Colorado places.  I hadn’t seen the movie yet, so yesterday I made a point of going to see it.  As you guys had told me, it was really a funny movie.  Watching the movie, I recognized almost all of the background buildings and scenery making up the scenes for that part of the movie.

So I decided to ride out to Madrid and take some

were almost falling down in the late 1960’s to 70’s, when Hippies moved in as squatters.  Those people built up a unique (down at heels) little tourist town.

Below is a photo of what the abandoned mine-owned buildings looked like when the Hippies started moving in.  (A few houses, like this one on the main street, are still the same today.)

The following are pictures of the areas of scenes around and in Madrid that I recognized from the movie.

Below left is a photo of Deane and Jack pushing their motorcycles up the road, as did the four “Wild Hogs” when they ran out of gas in the movie.  I recognized that stretch of road because I ride up and down it all the time.

Below is another one that I recognized in the movie, of a mid-size building with a couple of art galleries.  Until very recently, these were occupied by a big gift shop and an ice cream parlour. I and my Gold Wing group have stopped many times to get ice cream there.

pictures.  In my calling Jack and suggesting we go out together to take pictures, I found that he had also just remembered. So today we took a ride out there, with Jack’s wife Linda joining us.

Madrid is a small village, with about 20 gift shops and a couple of small coffee houses or restaurants on the one and only main street - that’s it!  It originally was a coal mining town supplying coal to the railroads in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s, where the mining company owned all of the buildings, and miners and merchants lived in tiny houses.  The coal mine went out of business in about 1950, finished off by the advent of diesel-electric train engines.  The town was essentially abandoned then and the little buildings

(It used to be a different colour, so maybe this one got painted for the movie.)

We not only took pictures, but we talked to a couple of the shop owners, to find out about how it went during the filming.  They said that the movie company moved in and painted the front of most of the buildings or houses there.  This explained to us why the village looked “cleaner than usual”.  (Only the fronts of the buildings were painted; the sides and back were left as is.)  Then after the movie was shot, the owners of the buildings and houses had the option of leaving the front the new colour, or having them re-painted to the original colour. - Most kept the new colour.  Interesting! Below is the area of the village where most of the action in the movie took place.

one of the main “Four Hog” actors, Martin Lawrence, had never ridden a motorcycle before coming here to Madrid, and he was quite afraid of motorcycles, so they actually set him up on a Harley with Training Wheels!  Of course, his Double / Stunt Man did most of the riding, and by the time they got finished, Martin Lawrence was riding fairly well, at least in the little Madrid village.

Now that I’ve seen the buildings and areas to know a little more, I think I’ll go back and see the movie again.

Jack also took pictures, with most being of higher resolution than these of mine, so he will be sending some of those soon.

When I saw the movie, there were several scenes which showed the “Diner” (Maggie’s Diner).  I knew there wasn’t a “Diner” in Madrid, but interestingly enough; the Disney Studio built the “Diner” on a vacant lot in the village. (It is just an empty building now, with no firm plans of what to do with it.)

The “Hotel” played quite a part in some of the town scenes, and I recognized it in the movie, from the white building with the green railing and stairs.  Here are Deane and Jack, at the “Hotel” in the movie, with it actually being an everyday operating “Mercantile”.  We chatted with the owner to find that the “dance” scene was done at the left side of the “Hotel” and the “Carnival” scene was done at the right side of the

“Hotel”.  He said that during those night scenes, they used such powerful lights that his house was lit up on a small hill nearby, at all times of the night.  He also said that the preparations and filming took about two and a half months!

Oh, one interesting thing that the owner told us is that

Well, hopefully that will be of interest to you all.  It’s not often that one gets some insight like this into a film being made.

Best Regards, Deane

(Deane and Jack visited from the USA during March this year)

Goldwing Mitchell Trip

Left home at 4:45 am to meet KayandGecko on highway at Burpengary at 5:30 so we could be at Blacksoil before 7:00 for breakfast and catch up with all before we hit the road for the day at 7:30.

11 Wings in all.  Would have been 12 but a 1200 had an accident the day before.  7:30 or there about Bevan gives us the run down (not to get lost on the highway, follow the leader for 500+ks), anyway off we go; 165ks to Dalby refuel.  All’s well except Vicki after having a flu shot the day before.

Off to Roma, 268ks, nothing better than a group of Wings travelling together.  Roma for lunch; now 45 min behind schedule (Oh well, the spa will still be there even if we are late).

On to Mitchell, roll into town, found our pre-arranged accommodation then on to the mineral spa pools to soak after the ride and catch up with every one as we were in 3 different venues (2 hotels and a motel).  Maree and I were in the Mitchell Hotel where they put on tea that night and breakfast the next morning for all of us.  It was all right, it meant everyone could relax and enjoy the company. Meady, Clint and I gave the pool table and jukebox a good workout until a few younger locals claimed the table. Then off to bed after a few more drinks.

Up early for breakfast and pack up. After breaky, got the bike ready for group photo opportunity, then off to Roma for smoko at the Big Rig, a mining museum. We then lost Fred, (aka Steven), as he had to get home I guess.  From there, on to Dalby via some side road which was quite straight with the odd bend or kink about every 100+ks.  During this section across the cb radio came "Good Morning Ladies and Gentlemen, this is your Captain speaking.  You will shortly experience a change to our straight and level flight.  This is a required change course and during the procedure you will feel your vehicle lean toward the left.  Do not be alarmed, this is a normal sensation associated with this type of manoeuvre.  Normal travel will be resumed as soon as possible.”

We saw about 10 cars.  We even saw 3 at once which almost caused a traffic jam. Then, on to Toowoomba and then on to the Shell at (Redbank).

Here we parted company and headed home.  All was well.

A Biker went into his corner coffee shop for his morning cuppa.

He liked the coffee, and the food was goodandcheap. One thing though, the waitress was a surly type who didn't like Bikers much.

This morning, business was slow, and the waitress (looking particularly grumpy) was keeping busy with a broom sweeping the floor.

He walked up to her and said, "Look on the bright side luv, when you finish work you'll be able to ride it home".

Bear’s Necessities…..

Jayne’s trivia

One of the most easy to forget, serviceable items is the heart of the electrical system.  It should be checked and serviced.  In most cases electrical system problems can be attributed to this very important item “THE BATTERY”.

O.K., the first check.  Find the battery - usually behind a side cover on the right.  After finding it, if you find acid and corrosion build up on the top try to wash it off with hot water making sure you don’t wash/splash substance over paint.  If you do get acid on paintwork don’t try to rub it off with a rag or brush, just wash off with plenty of water - water- water and more water.  O.K. it is best to remove the battery negative terminal first then the positive terminal.  Put the battery on the bench.  Check electrolyte level.  Level should be between the two lines on the battery.  If it is then it’s time to check the battery condition with a very simple tool called a HYDROMETER.  I find the best little hydrometer that actually fits in the battery was bought from super cheap for about $2.50.  Now with your safety glasses on remove the little battery caps, put your hydrometer in and suck up a good amount of electrolyte so the float inside the hydrometer is floating - should be floating in the marks 1.270 or the green (or teal) section.  If not place battery on charge for a good while and recheck. If electrolyte level is low when you first check the battery with safety glasses on and possibly rubber gloves, remove the small caps on the battery again and top up with distilled water to the right level on the side of battery, replace caps.  Most battery technicians recommend a small shake of the battery and let sit for a while and test again with your little hydrometer.  Now, if you are happy with your readings, battery terminals are clean, your battery over flow tube is clear and battery carrier is clean, replace battery in its holder - if you have a voltmeter, multimeter etc you can test your charging output by placing your multimeter on 20volts DC, your red lead on + (positive) and black lead on - (negative).   Start your ‘Wing and you should read about 13.9 volts.  Replace your covers and ride.

*PLEASE NOTE* When removing or replacing battery make sure everything is switched ‘OFF’ because sparks can cause fire or explosion.

Take care

This month ‘Queen’s Birthday’....

Firstly the official birthday of Queen Elizabeth II is April 21 (1926).  Most Commonwealth countries have an official holiday for the Queen’s Birthday even if it is on different days.  Australia of course has a day as well - ours being the second Monday of June - except Western Australia which has Foundation Day one week earlier.  The Governor of Western Australia decides the date each year based on school terms and the Perth Royal Show (usually the last Monday in September or first Monday in October).

The only civic occasion for this day is the release of “the Queen’s Birthday honours list”.

Fiji still celebrates ‘the Queen’s Birthday’ even though it is now a Republic.

Official Birthday (April 21) - this day in History

·         1856        The first train over the Mississippi River from Davenport to Iowa and Rock Island.

·         First moving picture demo in New York City by Woodville Latham.

·         1940        Bob Hawke offered contestants a prize of $64 on the radio show “Take it or Leave it”. Losers just left.

·         1956        A ten year old on ‘The Big Surprise” show won $100,000 for knowing about his specialty - Stocks.

Fun and Laughter at Coffs Harbour.

Well we were really pleased to organise ourselves to get away on the Wednesday and head down to Coffs Harbour for the Ulysses AGM.  We eventually made it onto the highway by 1.15 pm only an hour behind our schedule, but we were off – yippee.  It was an easy cruise to Ballina, but when we pulled into McDonalds all the school kids were there, so we pulled straight out again and headed down the highway to the next town ?? and had our toasted sandwiches and tea.  This is where I wrapped my  Lions scarf on, and pulled on my winter gloves, and

boy was I glad I did that – it just became colder and colder as we travelled towards Coffs – brrrr.  We arrived at our Motel at 7.15 pm, and Bear and Jayne had patiently (I think) waited for us to have tea.  We had to wait for the next morning to register, which we duly did and what a great set-up they had.  It was all very smooth, we were banded, and together with our shirts we had ordered and our sample bag, we were ready to check-out the showgrounds and find the rest of our Wing gang.

We soon caught up with LarryandAnnette, BillandMary and the kids from Emerald – Mike and Marie.  Their boat trailer is very unique, and Marie noted that they would be rich if they had a $ for every time they were asked if it (the boat) sailed!!  But it really looks as if it would!  Anyway, we girls (Jayne and I) had some retail therapy and had a wonderful time at some of the exhibits.  Thommo bought some bits for the bike under the careful eye of Bear, because Bear is the one who will be fitting them for us!  We had to restrain the Harriss’ from trading in their wing for 2 Intruders, we took photos instead which seemed to suffice for the moment.

I have to admit that I was very happy to get back to our Motel room where it was warm, and we had an open invitation for the others to join us – the bar was

open at 4 o-clock, and judging by the layers of coats and jumpers worn by Mary and Annette I was doubly thrilled to be in the Motel!

The following two nights were booked at the main marquee for our evening meal and entertainment, and the AGM theme was a Beach Party.  There were some very clever outfits, but we refrained and just mingled with the crowd – just a few thousand.  Bevan was a champion battling the throng and  saving a table for us Wings group, and we spied

many familiar faces over the next two evenings.   The meals were very well organised, and tasted pretty good as well.  Our second night was more successful comfort wise, and the music was excellent.  We even joined in with the scrounging for helium balloons so we could send ‘Jaynes’ bra up to the ceiling, and later when it floated back down we retrieved it.  So, we now have a momento from 2007 – a signed bra – which I believe we are going to offer as a Raffle Prize!

We did have one day of sightseeing, and we cruised up to Dorrigo to visit the Lolly shop where the girls had been wrapping lollies for weeks, and they were great fun to meet, and we stocked up with lollies.  We cruised the Waterfall Way which is spectacular, and oh so cruisy on the Wing – definitely worth another trip.

The main highlight of course, is the big parade, and what a huuuge event that was.  We poured into the sports field, and then it took another nearly 2 hours to get us all on the move, but it was so worth it for those ten minutes of fame.  Cruising along the streets and seeing all those people waving and smiling at us bikies!!  It was such fun, and I even took a few photographs just to show the family how splendid the people of Coffs Harbour were to support this parade.  We didn’t go into the main arena, and opted to meet Franz our newest member from Sydney.  Who incidentally, has more gadgets and lights on his Wing than our very own ‘Gizmo’.  Anyway we did a spin around Coffs Harbour, found a spectacular look-out, and then with most of our Wing group we had the customary fish-n-chips lunch on the wharf.

A very pleasant way to finish our stay in Coffs Harbour, it was time to get back and start packing up for a reasonably early get-away in the morning.  Weeeell, dare I mention that Ray was not too happy about finding room on the Wing that we didn’t have?  I won’t!  We said good-bye to our delightful hosts BobandFran (Motel owners) and with BearandJayne we headed for home.  The skies were grey, the roads were very wet but we did not get any rain, just a few drops threatened us once but it was an incident free trip home.  Our final stop for refreshment was at Reedy Creek Caltex where it was hugs and good-bye for a most enjoyable and fun time.  We pulled into our driveway at 3-30 pm -  phone calls to report we were safely home.  Ray unloaded the Wing, washing loaded, bags away, billie on, shower – cuppa – aahh another great time spent with our special friends.

Thank you all.

Valerie and Thommo.

*** Ride Leaders: Please provide a short pre-ride briefing that outlines the basic safety precautions that we in the AWRA like to observe when riding in groups, and a little about the ride and the rest stop locations.
