The Editor’s View

Hi All (from cape Canaveral apparently)

A couple of extra curricular rides this month, Charleen and I attended the Ipswich Christmas Parade and the Lockyer Ulysses Toy Run.  Both were also attended by Brent & Rae and Turbo & Wendy.  Those of you who didn’t go missed out on great times.  The wonderful looks on the faces of the kids lining Ipswich main street as our colourful bikes went by.  I couldn’t help but think how much better it might have been with about 10 ‘wings instead of three.  The Toy Run, whilst also being a great charity ride was also profitable in a material sense for Turbo and me as we took out $250.00 in raffle prizes.  I suspect however that Turbo may have only broken even, given the number of toys he donated.

Contributions for this magazine can be emailed to info@auswingriders.com or posted to 47 Breslin St, Carina, Qld 4152.  Photos and slides can be scanned and returned

Another ‘rocket’ from Clint, forgot to send the minutes etc for the magazine, although I know I was not the only culprit, everyone forgot.    Must be that we had too good a time at Coolum.   Sorry about that chief!

However it was good to see almost a 100% roll up for the Xmas party.     Myself and Rae, along with Ray & Val,  arrived a ‘tad’ wetter than others however, having had to ride through the centre of a storm.   In places where we encountered the strong winds I am sure it was only the sheer weight of the ‘Wing’ that kept us on the road, anything lighter would have been airborne.

Not withstanding Saturday afternoon’s weather, a great weekend with good friends, food and the occasional wine (?).

Brent

From the President

Clint has just given me a rocket for not having delivered a few words of wisdom for this month’s magazine.  Completely slipped my mind.  Could be that there is not a lot of mind left after the Christmas Party.  I hope everyone had a good time and got home safely afterwards.  My apologies for not participating in the Sunday ride but obviously something I didn’t have for breakfast didn’t agree with me.  Thanks to those well wishers who called me on Monday to see if I had recovered,

As it turned out, I was glad we didn’t take the mountain ride.  For the past few weeks I have been feeling a few wriggles from the rear end of the ‘wing and have been putting it down to the general wear of the tyres and the fact that I have never liked them anyway.  The feeling returned a couple of times on the way home on Sunday morning and I thought that was more due to my equilibrium problems rather than tyres.  When we got home I tried to inspect the tyre put had a few problems getting my head down to ground level and upside down.  What I did see though in the short time I had was two large cracks in the tread grooves.  A later inspection, when my head was better, highlighted two additional cracks elsewhere and a nail through a tread block but apparently not into casing.  In she goes on Thursday for a couple of new tyres so that should stop me complaining.

Lesson learned:  More thorough tyre inspections may be required and I should take more notice of what the seat of my pants is telling me.

Commiserations go to Lionel and Mary following their mishap after the Ulysses Committee meeting.  When they should have been heading for coffee after our normal monthly meeting, they were heading home when a @#$%$#@#@! person turned across their path and the inevitable occurred.  Thankfully, there were no serious injuries except to the bike, which I am told is pretty sad.  Lionel assures me that the BMW will be bought into service so they can continue to attend rides.  Best of luck, Lionel and Mary.

Keep the shiny side up

Bevan

Some one-liners for you.

It is easier to get older than it is to get wiser!

Capricornia Wingers

Nothing new from up North this month.  All probably exhausted from that long ride home from Coolum.

It was good to see Dale & Jackee, Robert & Penny and Peter down for the weekend.  It was a long ride and clashed with Dale’s work, but they did it anyway.

It might be a good idea to have our Christmas Do a bit further North next year

Just my humble opinion.

Clint

 Ride Report

Ride to Stanthorpe

Well it seemed like a silly thing to do, booking a lunch for November when it was only July , but that’s what we did because we didn’t want to miss using a great venue for lunch on our ride.

Finally the third Sunday in November arrived and we all met at Gailes Shell servo. There were eight Wings lined up with all having two up.

The Servo Lineup

Funny place to find a red light

Lionel, being shy as he is, didn’t tell anyone that we might stop at a roadside shop named “Meaning to Stop”, but when John had to stop to try to find a lost cover off a side box, it seemed ideal to check the place out and give John a chance to catch up. There was quite a lot of interesting stock and Val couldn’t resist two coffee mugs. “Thanks Lionel” said Thommo, “you just cost me some money.”

Not far down the track we rode through Gatton and on to the turnoff to Heifer Creek Road. This interesting, scenic road was supposed to have been first built by convicts in Brisbane’s early days. About half way up we stopped off at a pleasant spot where we could have morning tea/smoko under the gum trees.

Off again and no stopping till we reached the winery called “The Heritage” about ten k’s north of Stanthorpe. A group of historic bike riders was just leaving as we arrived, giving rise to some friendly exchanges.

The people at “The Heritage” greeted us warmly and we all enjoyed some wine tasting before lunch. Lunch was served to us at the huge oval table which was once part of the Legislative Council of Queensland before it was voted out of existence many years ago. I think everyone found this a most enjoyable lunch and it is the sort of thing we can do with our small numbers.

There were lots of photos taken and lots of friendly banter, or was that more appropriately called “conversation”, before we set off for Warwick for a petrol stop and then home.

RIDE REPORT

Christmas Party

The December Social can, of course, only be the Christmas Party and as Charleen and I have only been in the Wing Riders for a year, this was our first.  We had heard what we thought were tall tales from previous years.  Probably were.  I don’t know.

I do know that this year we all met at Coolum on the Sunshine Coast and all proceeded to have a great time.

Some say getting there is half the fun, well it was only that for some of us.  Most met at BP Caboolture and after a quick goodbye to Chris and Sheryl ( still having delays getting the new wheels), we had a calm and uneventful ride up the highway to Yandina, then in to Coolum where most of us deposited ourselves in the Caprice Motel.  Very nice.

A few others were a bit late getting away due to commitments and so came up later.  Unluckily for them, they ran into a severe storm.  One which caused much damage in Caloundra.  Poor people were holding on for dear life as their Goldwings were trying very hard to get off the road.

The Capricornia Crew arrived after a long ride from their far flung homes.  Great to see them there.

All arrived safely and it wasn’t long before everyone was in Spicky’s room for pre-dinner drinks.  Some more than others.

Then it was a quick walk over to the Bowls Club for our Christmas dinner, complete with a lovely meal, much laughter, music and dancing.   We all eventually made it back to our lodgings.  Some twice.

Next morning after a hearty breakfast at the Surf Club, we held the December Meeting.  Again in Spicky’s room.  We all squeezed in and made the air conditioner work hard.  There were 29 people present with only half a dozen or so unable to be there.  Probably our biggest meeting ever.

Meeting over, photographs taken, some had to leave fairly soon as they had a long ride north ahead of them, others just wanted to go straight back to Brisbane and several others went for a ride through the Hinterland to cap off a great weekend.

**RIDE ORGANISERS: Please check the details of your ride and let me know of any changes

IMPORTANT: EVEN IF YOU HAVN’T FINALISED THE DETAILS OF YOUR RIDE, JUST SUPPLY THE START LOCATION & TIME, THE GENERAL DIRECTION OF THE RIDE, AND THE MEAL ARRANGEMENTS.

PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY

It is the personal responsibility of each motorcyclist to be responsible for at least the following:

Ø       The roadworthiness of their vehicle, (including trailer)

Ø       That they are in a fit condition to control the vehicle, (including trailer)

Ø       That they obey the traffic rules and ride in a safe manner

Ø       That they ride in a considerate manner that does not endanger, or unnecessarily inconvenience other road users

Ø       To be correctly attired for safe motorcycling

**HINT

Are you prepared for a mishap? Each motorcycle should be equipped with a very basic first aid kit, and each person should have some basic knowledge of first aid, including CPR. The life you save, (or lose), may be someone very close to you. There have been many reports where onlookers have watched people lose their lives, when all was needed was a tourniquet, or a clear airway. Let’s take extra care over Christmas and the coming year. Riders remember, the person sharing the seat with you is the most important person in world to you – look after them.

Safe riding.
